FUEL * UK - Ethanol's Carbon Value Questioned

Ethanol-powered cars use nearly 50% more fuel than diesel powered cars, says U.K. research firm Automotive Industry Data (AID)

London,UK -The Detroit News (Detroit,Mich,USA) -July 3, 2007: -- Even in a green country like Sweden, AID says, consumers voting w/ their wallets, not their hearts, and buying diesels... Many experts say that when all inputs are considered, such as land, water, fertilizer, energy are taken into account, gasoline and diesel emit less CO2 than ethanol... At least 1 study at Stanford suggests that use of ethanol may increase ozone levels, especially in Los Angeles... Backlash is developing against use of ethanol because of effect on food, tropical rain forests, displacement of peasants... Carmakers may be putting too much emphasis on supporting ethanol-based cars beyond what governments may require... "... poor governmental policy results in an inefficient biofuels industry such as Bush's ethanol target last year,… [are] an indirect cause of the so-called 'tortilla riots' in Mexico...", said Jeremy Woods, Imperial College...
