* Canada - Province plans to punish careless truckers
Smashing into an overpass may soon cost truckers more money
Winnipeg,Canada -The Winnipeg Sun, by ROCHELLE SQUIRES -July 6, 2007: -- The province is cracking down on truck drivers who fail to adhere to height restrictions and smash into bridges and overpasses... Stan Struthers, deputy minister for infrastructure and transportation said, it's an avoidable hazard and an added expense the infrastructure and transportation department can do without... The incident that spurred the crackdown happened Tuesday afternoon when a Ste. Anne's trucker smashed into the Highway 9 overpass at the Perimeter Highway north of Winnipeg... The bridge had sensor lights to warn the trucker his load was too large and it was operational at the time of the incident, according to the province... One lane on Highway 9 will be closed for about two months while the overpass is being repaired...
