Trucking Association * Australia - Demerit system won't boost road safety

The Northern Territory Trucking Association says a demerit points system is not the answer to making the roads safer

The Territory system will include penalties for drivers who fail to stop at level crossings... The Association's Executive Officer Peter Goed says while there's no excuse for not stopping at a level crossing, imposing demerit points for Territory truck drivers is not the solution... Mr Goed says a balance needs to be found between penalising people for breaking the law and educating drivers about good behaviour... He says a demerit points systems in other jurisdictions have failed to improve road safety...
