Giant trucks * Australia - To ease traffic gridlock

Enormous trucks the size of road trains should be brought to the outskirts of Sydney to ease a massive predicted increase in traffic congestion

Brisbane,Queensland,Australia -The Brisbane Times, by John Garnaut & Jessica Irvine -May 3, 2007: -- In advance of a record increase in road funding to be unveiled in next week's budget, Deputy Prime Minister, Mark Vailerevealed he wanted to replace existing fleets of small trucks with a smaller number of triple-trailer vehicles called B-triples... The new-generation trucks - at present barred from travelling between the NSW coast and Dubbo - would haul cargo to new distribution hubs at places such as Liverpool, Bankstown and Wetherill Park... Some companies also want a designated route so the trucks can go into the heart of Sydney... On Tuesday night, Mr Vaile will unveil a new Auslink II transport package for 2009-2014. It is expected to increase the five-year road and rail budget by about a third to at least $20 billion, compared with $15 billion for the present Auslink package... The head of the Australian Trucking Association, Stuart St Clair, said Victoria had opened 98 per cent of its highways to large trucks by last June - compared with NSW's 6 per cent. Mr St Clair said differences in road carrying limits give Queensland producers a large cost advantage over competitors in NSW...
