* USA - 1,000 salaried jobs to go - Chrysler's Project X
Detroit,Mich,USA -The Detroit News, by Bill Vlasic and Josee Valcourt -9 Feb 2007: -- The Chrysler Group expects to eliminate about 1,000 white-collar jobs -- primarily in Michigan -- as part of a major restructuring to be announced next week, according to people familiar with the plans... The cuts will be in addition to more than 10,000 hourly jobs likely to be slashed in the top-to-bottom overhaul of the underperforming U.S. unit of German automaker DaimlerChrysler AG... By cutting both white-collar and union jobs, Chrysler can reduce its overall structural costs and shrink the organization...

* USA - Toyota chief: Recalls woke company up
Chicago,Ill,USA -The Detroit News, by Bill Vlasic & Josee Valcourt -9 Feb 2007: -- Jim Press, president of Toyota Motor North America, doesn't feel other automakers are closing in on the Japanese company in terms of quality. Speaking at the Chicago Auto Show, Press acknowledged Toyota faltered in 2005 with a high number of recalls, but said the drop last year is evidence that Toyota addressed the problem. "It woke us up and scared us to the point of re-energizing our efforts on quality," he said...

* USA - Toyota settles class-action suit on oil sludge buildup - The automaker will reimburse owners for repairs. The deal covers about 3.5 million 1997-2002 vehicles.
Los Angeles,CA,USA -The Los Angeles Times, by John O'Dell -Feb 9, 2007: -- Toyota Motor Corp., plagued for years by claims that engines in some of its most popular vehicles were subject to damaging oil sludge buildup, has settled a class-action lawsuit over the issue. The agreement calls for Toyota to reimburse owners for the cost of repairs and incidental expenses such as replacement rental vehicles incurred for a period of as long as eight years after the vehicle was originally leased or bought...

RECALLS * Japan - Honda recalls over 45,000 Civic Hybrids
Tokyo,Japan -The Detroit News (Detroit,Mich,USA) -9 Feb 2007: -- Honda Motor Co. plans to recall 45,335 Civic Hybrid sedans worldwide to repair a voltage converter defect that could stop the car's engine, spokeswoman said Friday... Japan's No. 2 automaker plans to recall 7,219 of the vehicles sold in Japan and another 38,116 sold overseas, mostly in the U.S., a Honda spokeswoman said. She spoke on condition of anonymity...
