Evidence in toxic leak burned up

Munster,IN,USA -nwitimes.com, by JOE CARLSON -Nov 18, 2006: -- An inspector with the Indiana State Police says officials may never find out why a truckload of combustible chemicals burst into a toxic cloud and shut an interstate highway for five hours during the cleanup Thursday... Scott Fleming, a state police commercial vehicle inspector, said the investigation into how the chemicals came to react with rainwater and cause the incident has essentially concluded after one day because the reaction created a fire that consumed evidence... A South Carolina trucking company carrying a load of dry sodium hydrosulfite on Interstate 65 pulled off the highway on the Indiana 2 exit about 1:30 a.m. Thursday after the driver discovered the chemicals had become compromised, police said... The chemical, which creates white smoke and even fire when wet, had gotten soaked with rainwater in the back of the truck, Lake County hazardous materials officials said... Neither the hauler nor manufacturer, Chemtrade Logistics, of Ontario, will likely face state fines, but county officials and local businesses are likely to seek reimbursement for the costs of cleanup and lost business, authorities said...
