* USA - Port traffic hits new records over summer
WASHINGTON,DC,USA -The Trucker /Port Tracker -18 Oct 2006: -- Traffic at the nation’s major retail container ports hit new records over the summer and is expected to continue to do so as the annual shipping cycle reaches its peak this month, according to the monthly Port Tracker report released Oct. 6 by the National Retail Federation and Global Insight... All ports covered by Port Tracker – Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Tacoma and Seattle on the West Coast, and New York/New Jersey, Hampton Roads, Charleston and Savannah on the East Coast – are currently rated “low” for congestion, the same as last month... Nationwide, the ports surveyed handled 1.44 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of container traffic in August, the most recent month for which actual numbers are available. The figure was up 5 percent from July and 8.4 percent from August 2005...
* UK - Auto logistics sector suffering from manufacturers' squeeze
UK -Transport Intelligence -10 Oct 2006: -- The state of the global automotive industry is causing increasing concern for logistics providers heavily exposed to the sector. The headlines have been largely concerned with the difficulties of Ford and General Motors, however other parts of the sector are also in meltdown. The big US component suppliers are racked with losses and even successful European suppliers are striving to diversify. These challenging market conditions are also being seen amongst automotive logistics providers - none more so than finished vehicle logistics operators... There are important lessons to be learnt from this market which is dominated by the demand side. It seems that few big purchasers have the self-discipline to avoid abusing their power in the short-run, resulting in deteriorating logistics provision. Parallels in this respect could be drawn with other sectors, such as grocery retail, where the buyers have similar powers...
* UK - Systemic security failures threat to express industry
UK -Transport Intelligence -18 Oct 2006: -- Evidence emerging from a recent criminal investigation has raised concerns over the 'known shipper system' used by express parcel carriers to expedite packages from identified customers through customs... The system works by the parcel carrier, working with the customs authorities of a number of countries in Europe and the US, identifying packages originating from shippers who send large quantities of packages across international borders. These key customers are given identifying numbers, which are printed on the package by the client acting both as a billing system and as a means of speeding-up customs operations. The logic of the system is that these 'known' customers are vetted for security purposes and their packages deemed to be free of any contraband. This enables the parcel company to avoid customs scans on these packages...
