* Australia- Firm takes on a heavy duty challenge

Nelmac Engineering has taken over K.A. and F.H. Rickard, which has built truck trays for 43 years... The new workshop manager, David McIntosh, assured customers that the quality of trays would not change and there would be an emphasis on delivering on time... The business specialises in making bodies for heavy duty vehicles used by councils and the private sector... Products include large waste bins, 10 cubic metre tipping bodies and the occasional farming 4WD trays...

* USA - Large Trucks Haul in Savings
USA -Wired Blogs, by John Gartner -25 Sept 2006: -- European engineers have designed a new twin-trailer concept truck that can haul more cargo while saving fuel, but safety systems need to be part of the package... The EuroCombi truck can 50 percent more goods per vehicle while reducing the fuel cost per ton by 15 percent, according to Gizmag... Of course saving fuel and reducing the number of trucks on the road are worthy pursuits, but these trucks also need to be outfitted with the latest camera and sensing technologies. The trucks will have lane departure warning systems, but they should also have camera on the rear trailers that show the drivers who is behind their vehicles... Having cameras on the rear and sides of the trailer would eliminate the truck blind spots that make it difficult to see smaller cars. The should provide audible warnings when cars are getting too close. Of course people should know better than to cozy up to the side of trailer...

* USA - Trucks Morph Into High-Tech Networks On 18 Wheels - Onboard software and wireless communications combine to give owners unprecedented visibility into their truck fleets
Manhasset,NY,USA -InformationWeek, by Charles Babcock -Sep 25, 2006: -- The cab of an 18-wheeler seems an unlikely place to update a company's billing system or provide maintenance information to the people who manage the truck fleet. But those capabilities and others are options as sophisticated electronics get packed in to build big rigs, school buses, and other large vehicles... Penske Truck Leasing gives its drivers a GPS-enabled smart phone as part of its Cellcomm driver management system. The phone lets a driver request directions while transmitting vehicle location every 15 or 20 minutes with a time stamp. The system relies on a $100 cellular device instead of the $3,000 satellite terminals of earlier tracking and driver management systems...

* Japan - Intelligent Transport System on
Tokyo,Japan -TNN (UK) -25 Sept 2006: -- Nissan says it will test a new and advanced road traffic system allows vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to help cut accidents and congestion... The test will run from October 2006 to March 2009 in Kanagawa, some 25km southwest of Tokyo and involve about 10,000 drivers. The advanced road traffic system uses data from nearby vehicles and roadside optical beacons to alert drivers to potential danger... The system warns drivers when they are speeding in school zones. And also give fastest-route guidance. In Japan, Nissan has set a target of halving the number of traffic fatalities or serious injuries involving Nissan vehicles by 2015 compared with the level in 1995... (See: Picture).
