Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said yesterday that talks with General Motors about an alliance were going well, but that it’s still too early to tell whether the three companies will wed... Ghosn and Renault-Nissan have set up an internal deadline of mid-October to provide more definition to their intentions, though Ghosn has already said that he doesn’t intend to become CEO of General Motors and that Renault-Nissan would more likely buy up a chunk of the larger automaker instead...
* USA - Toyota, GM August U.S. sales up; Ford, DCX down
DETROIT,Mich,USA -The Associated Press, by Tom Krisher -Sept. 01, 2006: -- Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. on Friday said August U.S. vehicle sales rose 17 percent from a year earlier and General Motors Corp.'s sales increased 3.9 percent as the companies said buyers looked to more fuel-efficient offerings. Ford Motor Co.'s dropped 11.6 percent and DaimlerChrysler AG's fell 3.2 percent... Ford still outsold Toyota after the Japanese automaker in July outsold Ford in the U.S. for the first month ever... Toyota said gas-conscious consumers made last month the company's best-ever August selling period. Overall, it sold 240,178 vehicles in August, up from 205,362 in the same month a year ago...

USA -VaroomVroom!/another Automotive Blog -Sept 1, 2006: -- The Big 3 have been trying to shave their health care costs by cutting eligibility and the percentage of benefits for both retirees and current employees, but as it turns out, the three companies have found tens of thousands of people still receiving benefits despite their ineligibility. As a result, General Motors, Ford Motor Company and the Chrysler Group are purging their health care rosters and even forcing reimbursement from some of those on the lists... As a result, the three companies have dropped over 86,000 people from their health care benefits plans, finding millions of dollars they would have otherwise lost...
