Nearly half the trucks leaving Miami's port bust federal cargo weight limits, jeopardizing road safety and raising terrorism fears
Miami,FL,USA -The Miami Herald, by STEVE HARRISON -Aug. 24, 2006: -- Every day, nearly half of the 2,500 trucks streaming out of the Port of Miami-Dade carry heavier loads than the law allows... Overweight trucks damage roads and can endanger motorists. But since 9/11, failures to stop and inspect the trucks also represent a weak link in the federal government's efforts to stop terrorists from smuggling a dirty bomb or other weapons inside cargo containers, experts say... Among America's 20 largest container ports, the Port of Miami-Dade and Port Everglades have one of the highest percentages of imports from countries without CSI ports... That means much of South Florida's incoming cargo -- roughly 40 percent at the Port of Miami-Dade and 50 percent at Port Everglades -- is examined only once it reaches the port... ''Shippers are often trying to disguise their contents to protect against theft,'' said the GAO's Loren Yager. "And if you have systematic evidence with overweight trucks that they aren't accurate, that's a signal that something could be wrong.''...
