Indiana-based diesel makers look to produce high-mileage engines for smaller vehicles

Indiana,IN,USA -Indianapolis Star, by Ted Evanoff/Bloomberg -August 26, 2006: -- Hunt the car lots for top fuel economy and the popular choices usually are a hybrid-electric or subcompact car... In a few years, though, you might find a third option -- a 45-mile-per-gallon midsize sedan or a 30-mpg sport-utility vehicle powered by a diesel engine... What's happening is a once-in-a-century shakeup that could help diesel power catch on nationwide. It might push Indiana diesel makers Cummins Inc. and International Truck and Engine beyond work trucks and into autos, generating millions of dollars in new sales and preserving jobs...
