Road remains bumpy long after cargo containers are off ships

Torrance,CA,USA -Daily Breeze, by Josh Grossberg -Apr 10, 2006: -- The containers have been scanned, scoured and searched. Officials are satisfied that there's nothing illegal inside and they're free to be sent anywhere in the United States... Once the containers reach the open road, they face a different kind of threat. Often filled with valuables, they are ripe pickings for thieves and hijackers looking for an easy score... Stolen cargo costs the trucking industry, railroads and insurance companies more than $10 billion annually, according to official estimates... Crimes include kidnapping, armed robbery and driving off with an unattended truck at night. Unsupervised trucks can be found in almost any shopping center parking lot and are often filled with valuable items... And to make off with a truck, all one needs to be able to do is drive it...
