GreenNews - Europe - EU Seeks Stricter Pollution Limits for Cars, Trucks

Brussels,Belgium -Bloomberg -Dec. 21 2005: -- European Union regulators called for cuts of at least 20 percent in car exhaust, seeking to ease air pollution while making EU automakers the world leaders in clean- car production... The European Commission in Brussels today proposed stricter emissions standards, especially for diesel cars, starting as soon as mid-2008. The agency also proposed quotas for governments to buy low-emissions buses and trucks... Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot said government fleets will add at least 13,000 more trucks and buses a year powered by fuels including liquid propane gas, natural gas, electricity and biofuels, which consume less energy and emit less of the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming... The commission estimated the plan would save energy and environmental damage worth 1.92 billion euros over 15 years, outweighing 1.61 billion euros extra cost for buying more- expensive vehicles...
