Hopes - USA - For GM and consumers, this hybrid is win-win
These days, anything that helps The General's bottom line has got to be good news
Canada -Globe and Mail, by TED LATURNUS -Nov 10, 2005: -- What could be better than giving full-size trucks better fuel economy and lower emissions?... On that score, it's mission accomplished for General Motors; the Sierra/Silverado Hybrid returns about 12 per cent better fuel economy than the garden-variety version. According to Natural Resources Canada, it consumes 13.2 litres/100 km in town, compared with 15.0. On the highway, there isn't a lot of difference: 10.4 L/100 km against 10.6, but if you're racking up a lot of kilometres, every little bit counts... Although GM is unlikely to be making any kind of profit on these two, the GMC Sierra and Chev Silverado Hybrids are a win-win situation. For consumers, it means less money spent at the pump and, hopefully, fewer emissions being pumped into the air. For GM, it means they can possibly lower their Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) rating in the U.S. and in the process not be penalized for failing to conform to government-mandated fuel economy requirements...
