In the wake of GM's discounts, sagging sales, Ford and Chrysler may craft their own incentives

Every time Detroit's automakers pledge to back off profit-killing and brand-tarnishing incentives, a huge dip in sales sends them running back to rebates... General Motors Corp. on Monday introduced deep new discounts on many 2005 and 2006 cars and trucks. Under the "red tag" sale that runs through Jan. 3, dealers will post maximum prices on most Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Pontiac models. For example, the sale cuts the sticker price of a 2005 Yukon XL Denali by $12,741 to $40,034... Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group said they were evaluating GM's new incentive program and planning their counteroffensives...
