TechnoNews - S.Africa - Driverless automated haul trucks nearly a reality
Garden View,Eastern Cape,South Africa -Engineering News -6 Oct 2005: -- Driverless automated haul trucks are nearly a reality and will represent the future in truck optimisation and fleet management. This is according to Modular Mining Systems (Modular) MD, Marc Ramsay... explains that the driver-less haul truck is currently being tested by Modular at a mine in South America and should be available commercially after the final phase of testing, which is due to end in six months’ time. Branded as the frontrunner, the autonomous haul truck is a 320-ton Komatsu 930E. The truck will be driven through the central mine wireless computer network and will be able to load and haul rock without the use of a driver... At installation, the trucks are driven once over the route on which they will operate and after that they can be left to their own devices to continue running that route. "The trucks are able to run the route in the most efficient waypossible, because they are able to sense their surroundings. This means there will be no accidents, even with objects that are only temporarily in a specific place"...
