Protest - Canada - Over 500 trucks join fuel price parking-protest


Wednesday, GRAND FALLS, N.B.,Canada -Canadian Press -Sept 07, 2005: -- More than 500 tractor-trailers were parked along highways in northern New Brunswick as a truckers' protest over high gas prices continued Wednesday... Authorities said they were trying to negotiate an end to the protest, which began Tuesday and halted the movement of trucks in northern New Brunswick... Only trucks were affected by the blockade. Cars were allowed to move freely on the highways while all rigs were stopped... He said he hopes the protest spreads to other provinces and into the United States... Savage said wholesale prices of gasoline, set by main refiners like Petro-Canada, Shell and Imperial Oil, went up higher and faster than could be justified by the damage inflicted by hurricane Katrina on southern U.S. refiners... However, previous investigations of the gasoline industry by the Competition Bureau have concluded there was no evidence of price-fixing...
