Emergency? - USA - Truckers report cool reception

Ice for hurricane effort may end up in Carthage

CARTHAGE, Mo,USA -Joplin Globe (Joplin,MO), by Susan Redden -9/14/05: -- ) Ice meant for hurricane victims on the Gulf Coast might end up at Americold Logistics in Carthage... At least a dozen tractor-trailer trucks are sitting, engines and refrigeration units running, on a huge parking lot just north of the Carthage Underground... Though miles away from the hurricane zone, they bear placards reading "USACE (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) disaster relief vehicle"... Their owners and drivers say they had been told to bring their loads to the underground after they were turned away - some from several different locations - where they originally were told to take the ice for hurricane relief efforts... The workers would not identify themselves or provide details on what they're doing at Americold, saying they're not authorized to talk to reporters. Attempts to reach corps officials via the telephone numbers they provided were unsuccessful...
