Undeserved - USA - Truckers Are Getting that Rap
New London,CT,USA -TheDay (subscription): Letters To The Editor, by Wendy A. Sautter -6 Aug 2005: -- I am writing regarding the recent letters concerning the motor vehicle tragedy in Avon and speeding truckers... I have to assume that these individuals have never driven or been a passenger in a tractor trailer, tri-axle dump truck or anything heavy enough to require specific certification and training. The fact that they have stereotyped all truck drivers as “reckless” and having a “king-of-the-road” mentality is unfair and a true insult and injustice to all of the hardworking, safety-conscious drivers on the road every day... The problem with this is that the person driving the truck doesn't have the luxury of only having to stop a 2,000-pound car. He or she is stopping a truck that, empty, can weigh 29,500 pounds and at least half the time that same truck will be loaded and can weigh as much as 73,500 pounds. Day in and day out, those hardworking drivers do it 100 times a day... To say all truck drivers are “reckless” or “speeders” is like saying all politicians are dishonest. We know better. If it weren't for truck drivers, these letter writers wouldn't have a cup of coffee in their hand this morning or even this newspaper they are reading... (Note by publisher: I concur Wendy) |
