Critics - USA - We Don't Need No Stinking CAFE

NEW YORK,NY,USA - Forbes, by Vahan Janjigian -08.25.05: -- Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary announced a plan to change Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for all light trucks (i.e., minivans, pickups and SUVs) sold in America. The plan is expected to save 10 billion gallons of gasoline over the lifetime of vehicles manufactured between 2008 and 2011. Environmentalists criticized the proposals even before details were released... The plan’s most notable feature is the creation of six categories based on size, defined as the vehicle's footprint (i.e., wheelbase multiplied by track width). Instead of having just one fleet-wide average mileage figure that manufacturers must meet as current rules require, the proposed plan calls for a different average mileage figure for each category. The smallest light trucks would have to average 28.4 miles per gallon by 2011. The largest would have to average only 21.3 mpg. Furthermore, vehicles weighing more than 8,500 lbs., such as the Hummer 2, would be exempt from the rules. Critics say the new plan isn't stringent enough and favors companies that already make bigger vehicles such as Ford Motor and General Motors...
