Amnesty - Mexico - Vehicle Industry Resists Proposals
USA -Forbes/Associated Press -08.09.2005: -- Truck and bus makers and distributors on Tuesday made denounced proposals to grandfather illegally imported used vehicles from the United States... The appeal by nine industry associations came as Congress considers a new amnesty for more than an estimated 2 million illegal vehicles - known in Mexico as "chocolates" - that enter the country under temporary permits or in pieces and stay without paying taxes or meeting highway regulations... "A contraband vehicle comes into our country and pays nothing (in taxes), costs 3,000, 5,000 dollars. It's bankrupting anyone who thought the law existed in this country," said Elias Dip, President of the National Confederation of Private Transporters... Industry groups estimate that about 100,000 illegal cargo trucks and 20,000 illegal buses currently circulate on Mexican roads, about 25 percent of the national fleet...
