-- Devastating trucking accidents put trucking safety issues front and center recently. The number of hours truckers are allowed to drive in a day and per week is especially controversial. Tensions are high in the trucking community concerning the “hours of service” rule, which was re-instated in December, overturning 2013 regulations that required... Ron Singer, longtime industry advocate and owner of Ron Singer Truck Lines, died suddenly Dec. 22 while prepping his trailer for a load. Ron built a successful business in Calgary, Alta. managing a fleet of gravel trucks that served destinations across Western Canada. However, he was a proud trucker first and foremost and was always ready and willing to put in a full day behind the wheel...Singer was as passionate about trucking as they come. He was involved in many industry associations over his career, including the Alberta Trucking Association and later the Alberta Motor Transport Association, the Alberta Construction Truckers Association, the Owner-Operators’ Business Association of Canada and the North American Truckers Guild... TRUCKERS' DEATH * USA: Carrying legal firearms ?

* Kentucky - New proposal honors slain truck driver and aims to protect others

Henderson,KY,USA -TriState -1 Dec 2014: -- A tragedy sheds light on a possible need for protection for truck drivers across the nation... Following Mike Boeglin's murder, many in the trucking industry are supporting new legislation named in his honor... Boeglin was killed during a robbery in Detroit over the summer... New legislation would allow truckers to carry a concealed weapon in order to protect themselves and their cargo... Right now, truckers may have a conceal and carry permit in one state, but that permit doesn't apply to every other state... Conceal and carry laws can vary from state to state as well... Mike's Law would allow truckers or other people employed in interstate commerce to apply for a federal gun permit... That permit would allow them carry concealed firearms from one state to another, or through a state while on duty...


* Michigan - Widow gives birth to daughter of trucker whose death spurred ‘right to carry’ petition

Detroit,MICH,USA -Overdrive -December 1, 2014: -- Another reminder of grave news from June — the daughter of late truck driver Michael Boeglin was born late last week, according to Truckers News... The Small Business in Transportation Coalition's petition to Congress for a federal 'business carry' program for interstate drivers had garnered 1,423 signatures as of this ... Ashley Boeglin gave birth to MacKenzie Albury Boeglin Friday morning. Ashley told local media that MacKenzie is a “spitting image” of her father... Michael Boeglin was murdered in Detroit in June. The 31-year-old driver out of Ferdinand, IND., was shot several times in an empty parking lot where he’d parked to wait to pick up a load at a nearby steel plant. His truck was also set on fire... Boeglin’s death again highlighted the need for more safe parking options for truck drivers...

Frustrated Campaign * Australia - Trucker dies as toll soars

A truck driver who died in a rollover at Gillman yesterday was the latest victim in a horrific year on SA roads

Adelaide,Australia -The Advertiser Sunday Mail/NEWS.com.au -December 16, 2007: -- ... The death of the northern suburbs 20-year-old on Bedford St brought the road toll to 120 – six more than this time last year... The climbing toll has frustrated a State Government campaign to keep fatalities under 100 for 2007... This year's toll has already eclipsed the 117 deaths on our roads in 2006... The prime mover crashed into a Stobie pole after failing to negotiate a right-hand bend... The alarm was raised by a female passer-by about 10.45am... Another truck driver, Bob Coad, arrived on the scene after hearing a loud "thud". "I looked in but he was deceased," Mr Coad said. "It's not what you want to see. It's a bad bend, it slopes away"...
