(Photo by Max Ortiz/The Detroit News: Jon Langley guides a Chevrolet Malibu onto a rail car at TDSI Automotive Distribution Center in New Boston)
Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Melissa Burden -August 7, 2013: -- The size and scope of General Motors Co.’s logistics $8 billion in operations includes moving parts and materials worldwide to 168 manufacturing plants, as well as customs and duties, and shipping spare parts, cars and trucks to dealerships... The Detroit-based automaker’s goal is to cut $1 billion from material and logistics costs in North America by 2016. Trimming that amount will help boost its North America profit margin by 1 percentage point... The company wants to move suppliers closer to isolated plants such as its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kan., and its Arlington plant in Texas. It is asking some to use closer plants or to build new factories closer to the plants. It was able to get a supplier of trim pieces to locate closer to Fairfax, which will save $66 million over the course of production for the refreshed 2014 Malibu... Now, automakers are looking to add efficiencies into their next growth cycle for vehicles hitting the market in 2016 and beyond. Michael Robinet, managing director of IHS Automotive Consulting in Northville said, the days of automakers willing to buy a product from 1,000 miles away for the lowest component price are over... “Suppliers are not going to locate next to an assembly plant and put up with the capital cost and risk … unless they have a longer-term commitment from the vehicle manufacturer,” he said...

* Michigan - Ford to hire 800 more salaried workers

(Photo)
Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -June 10, 2013: -- Ford Motor Co. plans to add 800 white-collar U.S. workers during the next six months, bringing its total number of salaried hires this year to 3,000, the automaker confirmed Monday... The new jobs — primarily in engineering, information technology, product development and manufacturing — will be in addition to the 2,200 new salaried jobs Ford announced earlier in the year. The Dearborn automaker will also hire workers in purchasing, finance and other areas... With demand for new cars and trucks poised to top 15 million light vehicles in the United States this year, domestic auto and parts factories are running at nearly maximum capacity for the number of workers on hand. Industry analysts predict that carmakers will expand both their workforces and facilities. Already, Detroit’s Big Three have all announced additions of thousands of hourly workers set for this year...

* DC - House passes bill to exempt automakers, other firms from some financial rules

(Photo
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -June 12, 2013: -- The U.S. House on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bill to exempt automakers and other users of financial hedging from Wall Street regulations approved in 2010... The bill is designed to correct a drafting error in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform act... The Business Risk Mitigation and Price Stabilization Act of 2013 exempts Michigan manufacturing and agricultural producers from undue financial regulation, he said. Companies that use derivatives to hedge their exposure to fluctuating costs of energy, raw materials, and business expenses "should not be subject to the same regulation actually intended to corral Wall Street greed" ... The bill -- if passed by the Senate -- would mean that the companies using the instruments wouldn't have to meet certain margin requirements to use the instruments. The law is aimed at preventing Wall Street speculators from driving up the costs of commodities using derivatives. Without the bill, the rules could boost the amount of cash companies needed to put up or prevent the use of the instruments...

(Photo from Ford: 2014 Ford Fiesta)
Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -June 6, 2013: -- Is America ready for a three-cylinder engine?: Ford Motor Co. is about to find out... Ford’s 1-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine has become an instant success in Europe, where small cars and smaller engines dominate the market... Now, the Dearborn automaker will be the first to try a three-cylinder engine in a U.S. vehicle in more than a decade, when its revamped Fiesta subcompact debuts this fall... Although the engine is only slated to appear in the U.S. in the low-volume Fiesta, the 1-liter EcoBoost engine will serve as an important litmus test, as Ford and the auto industry determine if the American consumer will accept three-cylinder engines, which would save consumers money at the pump and help carmakers meet federal fuel efficiency standards...

The world’s largest automaker was rolling out a new version of the compact Thursday night at a splashy event in Santa Monica, Calif., hoping to shed the old version’s low-cost image and attract new, younger buyers to its brand... The 2014 version, which goes on sale in the fall, is longer and sits lower than the old car, with a sculpted, athletic look that’s much closer to a sports car than the econobox it replaces. It also gets a new transmission, suspension and interior that Toyota says will make the car quieter and more luxurious, with better handling than the current version. * Minnesota - GE Capital Fleet Services and Carfax to build first comprehensive safety-recall reporting system

Eden Prairie,MINN,USA -BUSINESS WIRE -16 April 2013: -- GE Capital Fleet Services today announced a first-of-its-kind agreement with Carfax, the vehicle history expert for the automotive industry, to develop real-time reporting for fleet managers detailing safety recalls not yet performed on vehicles within their fleets... “By any measure, driver safety remains a top concern of fleet managers” Currently, recall notices are distributed directly from manufacturers to vehicle operators, putting the initiative to bring vehicles in for servicing with individual drivers rather than the fleet manager. This can result in the non-uniform handling of recalls across the fleet and can ultimately hinder driver safety. Under the agreement, GE will have access to Carfax’s vehicle data to identify vehicles from more than 30 automotive OEMs across customers’ fleets with recalls that have not yet been performed. The data will be turned into a customized web report that provides a complete picture of the open recalls across a specific fleet...

(Photo: Chrysler Headquarters Auburn Hills)
Auburn Hills, MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Hoffman -November 14, 2012: -- Fiat-Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionnehas conceded that he no longer has enough money to buy the rest of Chrysler Group LLC — but he may still have ways of coming up with it, including taking luxury carmaker Ferrari public... And he has time to figure it out. While the United Auto Workers, or at least the union-run retiree health care trust that currently owns 41.5 percent of Chrysler, can begin the process of taking the Auburn Hills automaker public again after Jan. 1, experts say the process of preparing the initial public stock offering would likely take most of next year... Fiat SpA owns the other 58.5 percent of Chrysler, and Marchionne has made no secret of his interest in buying out the union trust. But on Oct. 30, he announced a bold investment plan for Europe that will require him to spend the money he had set aside to do that... Like other automakers, Fiat is struggling in the economically troubled European market. But while other companies are responding by closing factories and cutting jobs, Marchionne is doubling down in the hope of passing the competition...
