* Minnesota - Push to change truck weight laws has local support

-- Local legislators and business leaders are part of a coalition to relax state truck weight restrictions... The Better Trucks Initiative, sponsored by the Aggregate and Ready Mix Association of Minnesota, would like to see construction and demolition materials added to the list of industries able to use extra-heavy trucks on state roads... Fred Corrigan, executive director of the Aggregate and Ready Mix Association, said the bill would not affect the current weight limits on standard semi-truck rigs, which can carry up to 80,000 pounds on 18 wheels over five axles. Instead, it would deal with truck rigs using six or seven axles and 22 or 26 wheels, which can actually reduce wear and tear on roads and bridges, he said... “The folks who were doing the demolition said they hauled 50,000 loads of demolished concrete out of downtown Minneapolis,” he said. “If you increase the weight just by 10 percent, that’s 5,000 fewer trucks on the road” ... Corrigan noted that Minnesota truckers already are at a disadvantage compared to neighboring states, which have weight limits ranging from 90,000 pounds in Wisconsin to 129,000 pounds in South Dakota, but said those limits are controlled by the interstate highway limits set by the federal government. Still, he said he hopes the current proposal in Minnesota helps even out the playing field...

INFRASTRUCTURES * USA - MnDOT cites issues for new truck weight restrictions

Rochester,MN,USA -The Austin News Post-Bulletin, by Elizabeth Jones -8 Jan 2009: -- A Mower County bridge is among six in the region that the Minnesota Department of Transportation has placed weight restrictions for vehicles... The restrictions will go into effect over the next week for six steel beam span bridges located on southeast Minnesota highways. Statewide, about 30 bridges will be reposted with additional weight restrictions for safety reasons... The bridge in Mower County is on Minnesota Highway 105 over Woodbury Creek, located 0.7 miles north of the Iowa border. Single unit trucks are restricted to 24 tons. Semi trailer trucks and double trailer trucks are limited to 40 tons gross weight...


* High-tech weigh station keeps trucks moving on I-4

Chugging by at 45 mph, the trucks have their weight registered, speed calculated, dimensions measured and axles counted by underground sensors... All in about 10 seconds...
