TESLA's Autopilot crashes again * Canada - "The autopilot didn't work”

* Ontario - The Autonomous Report: Cheap LIDAR is on the way and truckers may be in trouble


--- Another Tesla has crashed while in Autopilot mode. The incident occurred in Germany. According to a news report a 50-year-old driver's Tesla hit a tour bus as the bus changed lanes... Driverless autopilot systems have “come under global scrutiny following fatal crashes in northern China in January and in the US state of Florida in May ... The driver in Wednesday's crash told “police that he had not removed his hands from the wheel while the autopilot was activated, German press agency DPA reported” ... Could the drive be found not guilty, and liability end up on Tesla? ... A report in the tech press notes that cheap versions of the light sensing technology known as LIDAR will be key to the future of AVs and some are close to coming to market... So far, according to the report, the “size, complexity, and cost of the current generation of LIDAR sensors are significant obstacles”. The sensor itself weighs more than 13 kilograms and costs US $80,000” ... But the company has just announced a new product that will be good to 200 metres, weighs only 600 grams and could cost just $500 (if produced at typical automotive industry scale)...

* DC - Car technology cited in crash drop 

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -July 4, 2012: -- A new study shows advanced auto technologies such as forward-collision avoidance systems — especially those that brake automatically — result in sharp drops in car crashes... The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said forward-collision systems and adaptive headlights, which shift direction as the driver steers, has the biggest impact in reducing accidents... The study by the industry-funded group also found that lane-departure warning systems appear to hurt, rather than help — though it's not clear why. Other systems, such as blind-spot detection and park assist, aren't showing clear impacts on crash patterns yet... The Highway Loss Data Institute, an affiliate of IIHS, examined forward-collision systems offered on Honda Motor Co.'s Acura vehicles, Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz and Volvo vehicles...

NHTSA Reports that 288 Trucks Were Involved in Deadly Florida Motor Vehicle Crashes In 2007

Miami,FL,USA -Florida Injury Attorney Blog, by Paige Trop & Ameen -November 5, 2008: -- The NHTSA released this figure as part of its 2007 Traffic Safety Facts data... Other NHTSA 2007 Large Truck Facts:

• Nationally, 413,000 large trucks were involved in traffic accidents.
• 4,584 of these large truck collisions involved fatalities.
• 4,808 lives were lost in large truck crashes.
• 17% of the victims that died were riding in large trucks.
• 75% of the victims that died were riding in other vehicles.
• 8% of the victims that died were not riding in any vehicles when the crashes occurred.
• 101,000 others were injured in large truck accidents.
• Out of every nine traffic deaths, one of the deaths involved a large truck crash.
• 76,000 trucks were involved in motor vehicle accidents resulting in injuries to victims.
• Large trucks have a greater chance of becoming involved in a deadly accident involving multiple vehicles than in a single-vehicle crash.
