--- A ceremony was held last week to officially inaugurate the newly-rebuilt truck tyre production hall at Continental’s manufacturing facility in Otrokovice, Czech Republic. The inauguration marks the completion of a three-year project that involved a CZK 4.4 billion (£146.4 million) investment and has led to the creation of 130 new jobs. The project has seen the Otrokovice site, which previously served the European, Middle East and African markets, additionally develop into a production hub for markets in America and the Asia Pacific region...

TYRES MAKERS WORLDWIDE: * Canada: Ask regulations - ** India: Chinese dumping

* Alberta / Canada - Western truck firms still waiting for wide-base single tires


-- Three western Canadian trucking associations are calling on their respective ministers of environment and transportation to adjust weight regulations to allow fuel-saving, wide-base single tires that would reduce harmful emissions and save trucking firms’ money... The proposal from the Alberta Motor Transport Association, British Columbia Trucking Association and Saskatchewan Trucking Association aims to harmonize regulatory standards, which have been at a standstill out West since the single-tire technology debuted some 16 years ago. While Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec have made exceptions for the new generation tires, the Western provinces say they’re missing out on fuel savings of up to 10% compared to single tires, and GHG emissions reductions of about 8.5 tonnes per truck per year when using wide-base single tires... The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has also been championing for harmonization, having written to federal and provincial officials to work together to amend the weight restrictions...

** Tamil Nadu / India - Import of truck and bus radials shooting up 64% in FY16
-- Domestic tyre manufacturers are facing stiff competition from Chinese brands, on the back of an unexpected surge in import of radials into the country. With the import of truck and bus radials (TBR) shooting up 64 per cent in FY16, the bulk of the Rs 35,000-crore new investments by Indian tyre makers are under stress... Delhi-based Apollo Tyres, the largest TBR manufacturer in India, has committed Rs 2,700 crore investment to double its TBR capacity to 12,000 tyres per day at its Chennai plant... Most of India's TBR imports are from China, whose share in the category jumped to 90 per cent in 2015-16 from 40 per cent in 2013-14, according to data shared by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA)... According to data for the April-December 2015 period, the average domestic production of TBR per month in India is 500,000 units. Apollo is the leader in this segment, followed by Chennai-based MRF and Delhi-based JK Tyres...

* Record mileage on Michelin tyres

Eccles,EN,UK -HGV UK -February 19, 2013: -- Eccles-based Olivers Transport has clocked up 220,000 km with 7 mm of tread still remaining after fitting one of its Scania 6×2 twin-steer tractor units with Michelin’s latest 315/80 R 22.5 X MultiWay 3D XZE steer tyres. The general haulage firm expects the X MultiWay 3D tyres to reach at least 270,000 km before they need to be replaced – 80,000 km more than Michelin’s previous generation XZE2+ steer tyre, and 100,000 km more than a competitor brand recently tested on the fleet... The outstanding mileage is being recorded on the company’s first tractor unit to be fitted with the X MultiWay 3D tyres and Fleet Engineer, Kevin Hawker, believes the roll-out of this latest generation of Michelin steer tyre to the rest of the fleet could benefit the business notably...

* USA - Look beyond the label – says Goodyear Dunlop

Akron,Ohio,USA -HGV UK -November 29, 2012: -- Goodyear Dunlop is advising commercial vehicle operators to look beyond the new EU label grades when purchasing winter tyres... While fuel efficiency and wet grip, which are shown on the labels, are among the most important performance areas for operators of long haul trucks, they are less relevant in winter conditions. Grip and traction on snow and ice together with mileage are the key priority areas for winter tyres but are not shown on labels. In a recent survey that Goodyear Dunlop carried out in the Nordic countries almost all operators put traction on snow and packed snow as the two most important performance criteria for a winter tyre... Tyres for use on cold and slippery winter roads require a different set of performance criteria than for other conditions...


* Germany - Continental expands trailer tyre range 

Hanover,Germany -HGV UK -December 4, 2012: -- Continental has expanded its range of trailer tyres, adding a new size to the proven HTR 2 trailer tyre for demanding road usage on regional routes in the size 425/65 R 22.5... The new trailer tyre size completes the HTR 2 product range from Continental. The HTR 2 tyre for high loads is characterized by high mileage combined with reduced rolling resistance. This results in a noticeable fall in fuel consumption and costs... The tyrewith load index 165 for loads up to 5.15 tonnes is used above all on trailers with one or two axles that have to carry almost the whole weight of the trailer as is the case, for example, in logistics for large supermarket chains...

* Belgium - Goodyear truck tyres exceed expectations 

Brussels,Belgium -HGV UK -August 8, 2012: -- The introduction of the EU tyre label has not only initiated a new methodology for measuring tyre performance, it has also confirmed a long-standing tradition of excellence in product development at Goodyear... Since label grades were first announced in May, on a voluntary basis prior to the official introduction of EU tyre labelling on the 1st of November, Goodyear truck tyres have shown they can meet and exceed expectations when it comes to fuel efficiency. The best example of this is the Goodyear LHT II trailer tyre, carrying an EU label grade of ‘A’ in fuel efficiency in two sizes LHT II sizes385/55R22.5 and 435/50R19.5, which has been on the market since 2010...

* Germany - Vehicle alignment system introduced on Continental tyres 

Hanover,Germany -Transport Engineers -2 July 2012: -- Continental Tyres has announced new visual alignment indicators (VAI) for long distance tyres – a first for truck tyres in Europe... The firm expects its innovation to allow operators to recognise incorrect wheel alignment on trucks and trailers without the use of expensive electronic measuring systems... Excessive positive or negative camber angles or too much toe-in or toe-out can cause tyres to wear unevenly, decreasing tyre life, and can lead to increased fuel consumption, advises Continental commercial marketing manager, Tracey Hyem... The new indicators offer early detection of uneven tyre wear so that a simple visual check can be carried out as part of a routine inspection, she says... The VAI indicators are pairs of sipes that are 1—4mm deep and positioned on each shoulder of the tyre at five defined measuring points...


* France - Michelin highlights performance

Paris,France -Fleet Europe, by Tim Harrup -3 July 2012: -- Tyre manufacturer Michelin has launched a new marketing strategy under the name of ‘Michelin Total Performance’. In line with the best marketing practice, the objective is to put the emphasis not on the product, but on the benefits it provides to the end user...  The manufacturer points out that a vehicle tyre carries out a number of functions. It is the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road, and as such it caries the load, transmits the steering instructions given by the driver, and provides road-holding. It is also a critical component in the safety of all road users including pedestrians...  Michelin has 6,000 researchers, engineers and chemists working on all facets of the tyre and its performance, and it allocates almost 600 million Euros to R and D annually...

* Japan - Bridgestone Wins Lawsuit with Chinese Manufacturer

Tokyo,Japan-Bridgestone PR –March 16, 2012:  --  Bridgestone Corporation today announced that it has won a lawsuit against a Chinese manufacturer regarding the infringement of its design patent rights...  In May 2011, Bridgestone filed a lawsuit in the Beijing Second Intermediate People’s Court alleging that Bridgestone’s design patent rights were violated by Guangming Tyre Group. Specifically, the court found that Bridgestone’s rights were violated by the Guangming Tyre Group’s manufacturing and sales of tires using Bridgestone’s patented truck and bus tire tread patterns... The court ruled in Bridgestone’s favor in December 2011 and ordered the Guangming Tyre Group to pay damages for the infringement. The Guangming Tyre Group did not appeal this decision, and the decision was confirmed...


* Kentucky - Michelin debuts latest North American truck tyres

Birmingham ,Midlands,UK -HGV UK -April 22, 2011: -- Tyre manufacturer Goodyear Dunlop made tracks straight to Mercedes-Benz when it needed a new fleet of vans... The 20 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 313CDIs are based across TruckForce’s 15 operating centres, which act as hubs for some 100 satellite depots across England and Wales... The Sprinters are fitted with engine-driven PTOs which power on-board compressors, as well as Hope Safe-T-bar rear safety bumpers and roof-mounted flashing beacons. They have replaced a fleet of similar-sized vehicles by another manufacturer...

Paris,France -FT -September 28 2010: ... Investors, surprised by the French tyre maker’s €1.2bn rights issue, marked down its shares by more than 10 per cent on Tuesday. They worried that the desire to add 12 per cent to the company’s market capitalisation was a sign of something amiss. After all, this was the first cash call in 30 years... From the outside, at least, Michelin’s tread looks in reasonable condition. The recession was bad, but net income for the the half year was €504m, a respectable rebound from a €122m loss a year ago. * Michelin launches €1.2bn cash call

Paris,France -FT, by Peggy Hollinger & Paul Betts -September 28 2010: -- Michel Rollier, head of Michelin, declared the crisis in the tyre market over as the French group launched a €1.2bn ($1.6bn) rights issue to fund an aggressive investment programme... “The opportunities are there and Michelin is now ready to seize them,” Mr Rollier said as he unveiled a 2-for-11 cash call at a deeply discounted price of €45...
