SAFETY TRUCKS' STOPS * Europe - Improving European truck parking

Brussels,Belgium -HGV UK -September 9, 2010: -- The European Commission and the Belgian presidency will jointly hold a conference in Brussels on ‘Improving European Truck Parking’ at the end of October... This event offers the opportunity to showcase various initiatives in Member States and unveil the results of the European pilot project LABEL to provide truckers with reliable information about the security and comfort levels of available parking areas... Safe and secure rest areas are essential to truck drivers who must under the EU regulation for driving times and for road safety reasons take regular breaks... However, the freight transport industry and the social partners have flagged up both the lack of adequate parking facilities and the problem of criminals targeting their trucks at parking areas... During its presidency, Belgium wishes to emphasise the need for continued efforts of Member States to provide truck drivers with safe and secure rest areas... DRIVEN TO FRUSTRATION * Canada - 401 service stations 'a mess'

Gas stations, washrooms few and far between as repairs move at a snail's pace

Queen's Park,ONT,CAN -The Toronto Star, by Rob Ferguson -Sep 24, 2009: -- The Ontario government is asleep at the wheel when it comes to keeping service centres up and running along busy Highway 401, the Progressive Conservatives and motoring groups charge... Bladders are bursting, drivers are getting dangerously drowsy and truckers, well, sometimes they just have to keep on truckin'... As travellers who have driven stretches of southern Ontario's major thoroughfare know by now, many centres that have closed in the past year or so remain that way trip after trip after trip... That leaves long stretches of highway virtually devoid of places to fill up with gas, wait out a storm, rest, eat and use the washroom, said Progressive Conservative MPP Bob Runciman from the Brockville-area riding of Leeds-Grenville in eastern Ontario... Signs frequently warn drivers they will not be able to buy fuel on the highway for 150 kilometres or more – a far cry from the situation in the U.S., for example, where a motorist travelling from Boston to Toronto will find well-equipped service centres almost every half-hour along major toll highways... (Photo from THE TORONTO STAR, by CRAIG GLOVER. Sept. 23, 2009 - Progressive Conservatives are blasting the province for its slow movement on repairs to service centres, including one near Dutton, above, along Highway 401. Drivers rely on the rest stops for washrooms, food and fuel)

Truck stop quandary * USA - Four-hour parking limit in Virginia county

VA,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Clarissa Kell-Holland -July 2, 2008: -- OOIDA member Dennis Sullivan was minutes away from being out of hours on Monday, June 30, when he pulled in to get his scale ticket at the Pilot Travel Center in New Kent, VA... His plan was to stop and take his 10-hour break at the truck stop before heading back home to Marquand, MO, for the July Fourth holiday weekend. However, he said a sign he saw posted at the truck stop stopped him in his tracks... “There were signs posted everywhere that said there was a four-hour maximum on parking because of a county ordinance that limits the number of hours trucks can park there,” Sullivan told Land Line on Wednesday, July 2... Sullivan said he immediately went in to talk to a manager about his dilemma. The truck stop staffer told him: “I have to post the ordinance, that doesn’t mean I have to enforce it.”... While truck parking in Virginia is at a premium, Sullivan said the manager told him the New Kent County Planning Commission blocked the truck stop’s attempt to expand the number of truck parking spaces...

Govt Ignoring Call * Australia - For upgraded stops as fatigue regs approach

There is not enough urgency in delivering adequate rest areas for truck drivers in New South Wales, the industry says

NSW,Australia -ATN -21 May 2008: -- ... The Australian Trucking Association’s (ATA) NSW branch has hit out at the State Government for failing to act on improving rest facilities as new fatigue regulations approach... "With the approach of the new Heavy Vehicle Driver Fatigue legislation rapidly approaching, ATA NSW has expressed their concern that mandatory rest breaks for drivers will be almost impossible to comply with, due to the lack of rest areas on NSW roads," ATA NSW Manager Jill Lewis says... ATA NSW has requested the RTA to update the rest area information on the website to include suitability for heavy rigid vehicles, semis, b-doubles and road trains. It also wants a list of amenities such as fresh drinking water, toilets, lighting and, where possible, to commonly name the rest area... Lewis says... "For example, if a rest area is not suitable for a B-double, the operators and drivers should know before they leave the depot. What is a driver to do when they go to pull over for the mandatory rest break only to find that the area is not big enough for them to turn around in?"... ATA NSW is calling on its members to download the list of truck rest area locations and to make comments on their suitability...

Heritage Listing *- UK - Could be template for truckstops

London,UK -Road Transport -16 October 2007: -- The man behind the novel request to have Alconbury truckstop marked as a listed heritage site says he wants to create a process for protecting similar sites across the country... Professional Drivers Association (PDA) secretary John Bramwells says he was too late to send in an application to English Heritage to protect the truck park at Junction 1 of the M54 near Wolverhampton. However, if his attempt at persuading the government's statutory adviser on historic buildings is successful at Alconbury, he will use the idea as a template to protect other threatened truckstops...
