NEW ROAD TRAIN ASSEMBLY AREA * Australia

* Western Australia - Road train assembly area expanded

--- The opening on any new road train assembly area has to be good news... Stage two of a Road Train Assembly Area (RTAA) in Forrestfield, just to east of central Perth was opened in late 2016... The $5million project added a further 14,500 square metres of hardstand to the existing RTAA facility and provides an additional 20 parking bays for 36.5m road trains... The completed RTAA now provides 28 parking bays in total as well as 24 hour lighting and an ablutions block... Escorted oversized loads can now travel down the on-ramp from Tonkin Highway, using the purpose-built high wide load crossover in the RTAA to bypass the traffic signalled junction... The Great Eastern Highway, carries up to 25,000 vehicles a day, is the primary east-west freight route for Western Australia and is the key route for travel between the Goldfields, Perth and the south-west region...

TRUCKS PARKING SYSTEM * USA: A high-tech solution

* Indiana - Truck Parking System coming to hoosier highways
-- Truck drivers are tired—literally—of searching for parking spots. In a survey of 4,000 truck drivers conducted by an Illinois consulting firm, 95 percent said they spend more than 15 minutes to find parking for mandatory rest periods. Nearly 40 percent search for longer than an hour. The scenario further exhausts tired drivers and impacts businesses’ bottom lines...  However, transportation leaders say a recent $4 million grant is putting Indiana on the “straight and narrow” toward a high-tech solution... Eight states are sharing a $25 million grant to implement the Truck Parking Information and Management System to help drivers find open parking spaces when they need them. Federal regulations prohibit truck drivers from surpassing 11 hours of driving per day, but many struggle to find a safe place to rest... In Indiana, the new electronic system will operate along I-65 and I-70. Automated sensors will monitor 15 truck parking sites to track where open spaces exist in real-time. The sensors will be calibrated according to how spaces exist in each lot, then count the number of trucks that enter to park and exit. The number of open spaces will be automatically calculated and displayed on signs along the interstate... In addition to Indiana, seven other states will be installing the same system: Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The ultimate goal is to create a seamless network for drivers making long-haul trips... The system is expected to be up and running in 2018, and INDOT believes public-private partnerships with truck stops could be the best route for adding more parking spaces to the monitoring system...

* Maryland - Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration warning truck drivers of weekend storm

-- Forecasted snowfall and strong winds may present dangerous driving conditions; “Safe Havens” available at 17 ridesharing lots statewide... The Maryland Department of transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is warning professional truck drivers to keep an eye on the weather forecast for travel this weekend. If the current predictions are correct, trucking companies and truck drivers should consider altering travel plans to avoid Maryland this weekend due to potential snow-related hazardous driving conditions... SHA is also reminding truckers who may find themselves traveling during a severe storm that 17 park and ride lots are available for emergency truck parking to ride out heavy snowfalls and blizzard-like conditions...

TRUCKS PARKING SOLUTIONS * USA: Study

* DC - DOT releases parking study, announces coalition to tackle long-standing problem

-- Noting that it was a “milestone borne out of terrible tragedy,” the U.S. Department of Transportation today released a long-awaited survey on the lack of safe parking for truck drivers and announced a national coalition of federal agencies, trucking and safety groups to find solutions... The tragedy they referred to was the death of trucker Jason Rivenburg, who was killed at an abandoned South Carolina gas station in March 2009 for the $7 in his pocket... Jason’s widow, Hope Rivenburg, on hand for the announcement in Washington, D.C., noted the “many killed before and since Jason due to lack of safe truck parking” ... Michael Boeglin, 30, was shot dead in his truck in Detroit in the early morning hours of June 26 last year. His truck was set on fire, presumably to cover up the crime. He was parked overnight some 200 yards away from the facility where he was supposed to drop off a load of steel later that morning... Another trucker, Truman Lee Smith, was shot more than three years ago during an apparent robbery while waiting to unload at a food warehouse in East St. Louis. He had 21 cents in his pockets when found... The state-by-state study on available parking was mandated in the “Jason’s Law” (named for Rivenburg) part of MAP-21 legislation... According to a DOT news release, over the coming months, the DOT and the National Coalition on Truck Parking “will engage in a dialogue with state and local governments, law enforcement and the trucking and business communities to work together to advance truck parking solutions to meet the needs of the nation’s truck drivers” ...

NY,USA -The New York times, by Benjamin Preston -Oct 24, 2014: -- Vertical parking devices, like the steel stacking shelves that hold several cars, are common around the city, but a new vertical parking system that can turn two street-level parking spaces into a dozen has come to Brooklyn... Three 43-foot-tall steel structures from Parkmatic, a company based in New York, were recently installed in a parking lot on the corner of Tillary and Gold Streets. The system tries to simplify vertical parking by stacking cars on an automated Ferris wheel of sorts and has increased the capacity of the Brooklyn lot almost 30 percent... The difference between Parkmatic’s carousel and standard space-maximizing devices is that it doesn’t require moving vehicles out of the way to get to other cars. In a typical two-, three- or four-high stacker, the bottom vehicles must be moved out of the way so the top shelves can be lowered to the ground... A keypad at the front of each carousel allows lot attendants to select the vehicle they want. An electric motor hums quietly as a double roller chain and steel links bring hinged trays down and then back up, as on a Ferris wheel. In about two minutes, which depends on the number of cars the carousel is set up to hold, the top car can be brought to street level. The machine moves clockwise and counterclockwise, and a computer chooses the quickest direction for the vehicle that has been selected...

Maple Grove,MINN,USA -The Star Tribune, by TIM HARLOW -September 22, 2014: -- In its 2006 Large Truck Crash Causation Study, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found fatigue to be a leading factor in truck crashes... Federal regulations limit truckers to a maximum 70-hour workweek, down from 82 hours since tighter rules went into effect in July 2013. The rules, enacted to combat drowsy driving, require truckers who reach their weekly limit to rest for 34 consecutive hours before starting another 70-hour work period. Truckers also are limited to a 14-hour workday and no more than 11 hours of driving in a single day... Kind of like motel vacancy signs, new signs near three rest areas along eastbound Interstate 94 now tell truck drivers how many parking spaces are available... The signs are part of a pilot project led by the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the University of Minnesota designed to give truckers real-time information about where they can find a safe place to pull off the road when they have reached their driving limit... Rest areas testing the system are the Big Spunk Rest Area near Albany, Enfield near Monticello and Elm Creek in Maple Grove... Cameras scan the lot to determine how many truck spots are open. The information is sent to a computer, which relays it to electronic signs, the MnDOT website and directly to truckers whose cabs are wired to receive it... The system has worked at 95 percent accuracy since it went live in April, said Truck Availability Parking System (TAPS) project manager John Tompkins...

New York,NY,USA -Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (PR), by Claudia Gunter -February 23, 2010: -- Ninety-nine percent of all U.S. driving trips end in a free parking space, but when the economic and environmental consequences are considered, these parking spots aren’t really “free” after all. Smarter parking management can benefit consumers and businesses in time and money saved, according to a report released today by Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP)... (Click here to download the report) “U.S. Parking Policies: An Overview of Management Strategies,” cowritten by Professor Rachel Weinberger of the University of Pennsylvania, John Kaehny, and Matthew Rufo, illustrates how parking management in most U.S. cities creates additional traffic and air pollution, and feeds auto-dependence. As long as parking is considered independently of transportation policy, parking demand and traffic will continue to increase in the form of excess auto trips, on-street parking shortages, and a decline in the overall pedestrian environment. Traditional parking policy prioritizes private automobile use, undermining the use of public transit, walking and bicycling as travel modes, spurring significantly higher household travel costs for Americans... Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and other U.S. cities are experimenting with new parking policies and other cities can learn from them. Through more sensible parking management, the authors assert, we can improve our cities, the environment, the economy, and overall quality of life...

Coin-free Parking * USA - Coming to city soon

Port Elizabeth,South Africa -Weekend Post, by Luyolo Mkentane -11 Nov 2009: -- A new parking management system aimed at replacing conventional coin-operated parking metres will be unveiled in Nelson Mandela Bay next month... With the MobiPark Electronic Management System, the brainchild of local company Jongisizwe Traffic Solutions, coin-operated parking meters would be replaced by parking attendants with handheld HTC cellphones... The devices, which will be permanently linked to the municipal traffic management system, would capture vehicle information and calculate the parking fee due... Parking without paying would result in a fine... Besides being neat in appearance, the 160 attendants had been screened by the SA Police Service. They had also been tested for comprehension and aptitude...

TRUCKS' PARKING * USA - Two of nation’s busiest interstates to get $11 million for

Washington,DC,USA -The Trucker News Services -9 July 2008 — Two of the nation’s busiest interstates will receive $11 million, more than $5 million each, in federal support for innovative strategies to reduce the frustration of truckers looking for parking on congested routes, Acting Federal Highway Administrator Jim Ray announced today, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Transportation... Ray added that the two interstates, I-95 and I-5, also were selected under the Corridors of the Future Program, part of the DOT’s national congestion initiative, in September of last year...
