Criminals 'copycatting' registration plates * Ireland - Beware trucking

* Dublin - Plates of Irish vehicles "cloned" to transport illegal persons and alcohol

--- A major Irish trucking company has claimed the licence plates of some of its vehicles are being ‘cloned’ by criminals in Europe... Setanta Vehicle Importers Limited, based in Dublin, hire out some of their trucks on a contract basis and have had a number of incidents involving ‘copycats’ over the past two months... In one case, a customer of Setanta received a letter notifying them that their truck had been impounded by Austrian authorities, and they were being prosecuted for the transportation of illegal persons. The person’s actual truck was in Ireland at the time, and the registration details had been copied... In some cases, the cloned trucks are racking up toll charges of €1,000, which are being issued to the owners of the legitimate vehicles... Ms Concarr explains how the company are fighting the toll charges and parking fines. “In Ireland, you could go online to the road haulers licencing website and search for a road haulier and all his licence plates are there or online, so it’s easy enough to copy them"... Jerry Drummond, Operations Manager with Glantrans International Carriers Limited, recently received a letter notifying him that one of the company’s trucks had been seized in Dover, after it was found to be transporting 26 pallets of beer without a licence to do so. However, none of their trucks were in Dover on the day in question. In another incident, Mr Drummond was contacted by the Department of Public Prosecution in Bruges, who informed him that one of their trucks had been seized... The operations manager says the truck was in Dublin at the time. “It puts incredible strain on the business, having to fight these issues. I spent nearly my whole day yesterday trying to sort out who owns this truck” ...

TRUCKERS' WATCH * Ireland: Bridge collisions increase

* Dublin - Irish Rail tell truck drivers to 'wise up' about bridge collisions

--- Irish Rail has warned truck drivers to be more aware of their vehicle heights as the number of bridge collisions increased this year... In 2014 there were 85 bridge strikes across the network, however this year to date there have been 68 incidents... Irish Rail said that large vehicles hitting bridges is one of the greatest safety risks they face... They said bridge strikes can cause significant delays to both rail and road services, as it must carry out a structural assessment of the bridge before allowing trains to pass over following a hit, and road traffic can end up severely backed up...

TRUCKING INDUSTRY * Ireland - Haulage operator hits out at cost of doing business in

One of Ireland’s leading haulage companies has hit out at the cost of doing business in the Republic

Dublin,Ireland -HGV Ireland - September 25, 2009: ... Eugene O’Reilly of O’Reilly Transport says that Ireland needs to reduce its cost base if it is to regain competitiveness... “Every economist is telling us that we are not cost effective in this country and as someone who operates businesses in Northern Ireland, England and the Republic I could not agree more,” he said... O’Reilly cites road tax as a case in point. Annual road tax on a truck on six axles running at a gross vehicle weight of 44 tonnes in Ireland is €2415.00. O’Reilly says road tax in the UK for the equivalent truck is £1200.00 or €1,332 at today’s exchange rate... O’Reilly singles out Dublin City Council for criticism. When the permit system for five-axle trucks came into force in February 2007, permits cost €5. The rate is now €7, an increase of 40 per cent in a little over two and a half years... * Ireland - RSA criticises insurance industry over HGV insurance

Dublin,Ireland -HGV Ireland -September 30, 2009: -- The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has criticised the insurance industry for covering HGVs that don’t have an up to date Certificate of Roadworthiness... Chief Executive, Noel Brett, said the insurance industry could be more vigilant when insuring HGVs. “Trucks that do not have current commercial roadworthiness certificates should not be insured,” he said... Brett said he did not expect the insurance industry to take on the role of the Gardai but he said they could do more “in making it more difficult those who use vehicles that are simply unroadworthy and dangerous”...
