ROAD ACCIDENT * South Africa: In 2016, 14,000 people died on the roads

* Durban - 25.1 people per 100 000 die on our roads every year

--- Truck owners have been warned that they will compelled to take personal responsibility for road accident carnage that their employees cause. The warning, from an activist organisation, was triggered by a spate of truck related disasters over the past month... Our road accident statistics, in general, are appalling, with transport-related injuries among the 10 biggest causes of death in South Africa. In 2015, road accidents cost an estimated R143bn, about 3.4% of GDP, with 70% of that being the cost of human casualties... In 2016, just over 14,000 people died on the roads. As a rule of thumb, one can multiply the mortality statistic by five to estimate the serious injuries, and by 15 for minor injuries... In Australia, which once had worse statistics than SA, 5.3 people per 100,000 of population die on the roads each year. In Europe, that is 9.3. In Africa, with some of the worst road s in the world, it is 26.6. In South Africa, with the best roads in Africa, it is 25.1 ... According to the World Health Organisation in 2015, SA had the highest prevalence of road deaths associated with drunk driving. Johannesburg, according to the World Resources Institute, is the 13th most likely place in the world to die on the road...

ROAD FATALITIES * USA: Truck involved fatality rate continuing to decline

* Virginia - ATA: The truck-involved fatality rate fell for the second straight year to 1.40 per 100 million miles traveled

-- The American Trucking Associations said Thursday that an analysis of data from the Department of Transportation shows over both, the long and short-term, that the rate of truck-involved fatalities is declining... According to ATA’s analysis of miles traveled data from the Federal Highway Administration and highway fatality data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the truck-involved fatality rate fell for the second straight year to 1.40 per 100 million miles traveled. The comparable figures for 2013 and 2012 were 1.44 and 1.47, respectively... Per NHTSA, there were 3,903 truck-involved fatalities in 2014, a decline of 61 total from the previous year. At the same time, the number of miles traveled by large trucks rose to more than 279 billion... Numerous studies have found that trucks are responsible for initiating less than a third of all fatal car-truck crashes, which is why ATA supports aggressive traffic enforcement and education programs aimed at changing the unsafe behaviors of all motorists, ATA President and CEO Bill Graves said...

* Ontario - Trucker, hauling company charged in crash that sent seven to hospital

Milverton,ONT,CAN -CTV Kitchener -August 19, 2014: -- OPP have laid charges in connection with a crash that occurred late last month near Milverton... On July 31, a transport truck and minivan collided at the intersection of Perth Road 121 and Line 67... At least three of the seven people in the van had to be extricated, and two of its occupants were taken to a London hospital via air ambulance... Tuesday, police announced the laying of charges against the gravel truck’s driver and owner. Mike Donkers, 23, is charged with careless driving and failure to accurately complete a daily inspection report under the Highway Traffic Act... Donegan’s Haulage Ltd. faces a Highway Traffic Act charge of failure to ensure daily inspection report is completed...

Rubbish collections have been suspended across Sydney after one of Australia’s largest waste management companies pulled its entire fleet off the road following a fatal accident in South Australia... The decision by Transpacific to withdraw all of its Cleanaway trucks from service to check the safety of its national fleet will affect thousands of residents... The company announced late on Tuesday that all of its 2800 trucks would be taken off the road after one of its vehicles smashed into three stationary cars waiting at traffic lights in Adelaide on Monday afternoon... A 41-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man were killed. The 28-year-old male truck driver and a 48-year-old woman are both in a critical condition in hospital... Police on Tuesday said they were investigating whether brake failure had caused the crash at the "high risk location"... Transport Workers’ Union national secretary Tony Sheldon said the decision to take the entire fleet off the road was further evidence of the economic pressure imposed by clients on transport companies and their drivers... Tight client margins and unrealistic delivery or collection schedules could force operators to delay essential maintenance or put economic pressure on drivers, he said...


* NSW - Sentencing magistrate 'horrified' trucking company not subject to stringent heavy vehicle inspections

Sydney,NSW,Australia -AAP/9news -August 20, 2014: -- A magistrate says she is "horrified" the trucking company involved in a fatal tanker crash in Sydney's north was not required to undergo annual heavy-vehicle inspections... Two people were killed and five were injured when a Cootes Transport tanker rolled on its side, burst into flames and collided with several cars on Mona Vale Road, Mona Vale, in October 2013... The national trucking company came under scrutiny after the accident and was charged with more than 300 offences... NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) alleged it had discovered significant defects in the company's fleet, including faulty brakes and suspension... Cootes has pleaded guilty to 255 charges, some of which carry maximum penalties of $11,000... At present, if a heavy vehicle is registered in NSW, it has to undergo mandatory annual inspections...

Sydney,NSW,Australia -ATA Friday Facts -21 Sept 2012: -- The latest report from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) reveals an increase in the number of fatal crashes on our roads involving articulated trucks. However, heavy rigid truck crash fatalities continue to fall... In the year March 2011 to March 2012, there were 131 fatal crashes involving articulated trucks on Australian roads, compared to 119 crashes the year before... NSW had the largest number of truck-related fatalities, with 74 deaths resulting from accidents involving articulated or heavy rigid trucks in the year ended March 2012. Queensland had the next highest toll with 53 deaths...


* USA - Traffic Deaths Rise at Record Rate 

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -28 Sept 2012: -- The total number of people killed in traffic crashes jumped 9% in the first half of 2012 to 16,290, the largest increase in first-half fatalities since the federal government started tracking the statistic... Road fatalities hit their highest level since 2009, when there were 16,527 deaths, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in its preliminary estimate released this week... NHTSA did not break out truck crashes... Based on estimates of how many miles Americans drove, there were 1.12 road fatalities per 100 million miles traveled, down from 1.04 in the first half of 2011 and is the highest since the 2009 level of 1.13...

TRUCK CRASHES * USA - Study finds seasons, time of day affect rates

CAL,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Jul 20, 2010: -- Truck collisions and near-collisions are low from January through June, but more than triple at points between July and November, according to a new analysis of truck crash data... Also, collisions and near collisions peak on Tuesdays and Fridays in the long-haul trucking segment, peaking between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. as well as 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., with crash levels dropping to their lowest levels between 11 p.m. and 9 a.m... These are the findings of California-based DriveCam Inc., which analyzed its video event recorder database of over 18-million driving events across two-billion driving miles accumulated during 2009 to examine the frequency of collisions and near collisions by month, day, and time of day...

FATAL COLLISIONS * Canada - BC truckers most crash prone; still safer than car drivers

Vancouver,BC,USA -Today's Trucking -12 June 2009: -- Truckers in B.C. were almost two times as likely to be involved in a fatal collision than drivers from Ontario or Quebec, according to a 166-study commissioned by the BC Trucking Safety Council -- a industry co-op between the BC Trucking Association and WorkSafeBC... In fact, the study -- titled "Best Practices for Truck Safety" -- found that B.C. truckers are the most crash prone in Canada... They were to blame for 18.9 percent of fatal accidents in Canada, compared to 10 percent in Central Canada; 14.8 percent in the rest of the West; and 12.2 per cent in the Atlantic Provinces... According to a report by The Vancouver Sun, there were 470 fatal accidents in B.C., but the truck driver was the fatality in only 20 per cent of them... The study, conducted by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation, also found that drivers of the other vehicles involved were found to be more often at fault, which is inline with virtually every study comparing truck-car cash rates. In B.C., specifically, 57 percent of non-truck vehicles were to blame... The newspaper reports that speeding, fatigue, impairment by alcohol or drugs, undivided roads; and poor weather and road conditions were the key contributing factors... ACCIDENTS * Canada - Fatigue, inexperience fingered in crashes



London,ONT,Canada -The London Free Press -May 25, 2008: -- Driver fatigue and inadequate training are fingered by some Highway 401 motorists as the likely culprits in truck crashes such as Friday's in London between two Michigan-bound garbage trucks... One driver was killed in the flaming collision between the two Toronto trash rigs, both driven by Brampton drivers... At the Flying J Truck Stop along the 401 in London, motorists had mixed thoughts about the trucking problems... Just last week the pair, moving to Guelph, followed a regular transport truck east from London, near Woodstock, that was weaving across three lanes of traffic and nearly sideswiped another truck... It was only about 8 p.m., and Warmuth and Henderson said they were so concerned they called police... The driver was impaired by fatigue, they believe...
