TRUCK COSTS * USA: OOIDA opposes an increase to the federal excise tax on new trucks and trailers

* Missouri - Truckers support resolution against increasing excise taxes on new trucks

  --   OOIDA is supportive of a resolution in Congress that opposes any increase to the federal excise tax on new trucks and trailers. The Association supports ahead of any attempts that would increase the 12-percent tax on new trucking equipment in the next highway bill... The average retail price of a new truck is $169,000, and that continues to increase based on mounting regulatory requirements for fuel economy and emissions. The 12 percent federal excise tax, or FET, adds another $20,280, on average, to the purchaser’s cost... According to the American Truck Dealers, the federal excise tax on new trucks was established in 1917 to help defray the cost of World War I. The initial rate was 3 percent but was raised to 12 percent when Congress incorporated the FET into the Highway Trust Fund to pay for transportation... From 2002 up through the current proposals for fuel economy and emissions, environmental regulations will have added more than $30,000 to the sticker price of a new truck, according to American Truck Dealers...

Peterborough,EN,UK -Fleet News -15 March 2013: -- Following an extensive pilot in 2012, GE Capital’s Fleet Services division has launched Integrated Solutions - a new online solution to allow fleet managers to prioritise the most effective actions to reduce costs and improve driver safety based on real fleet data... Integrated Solutions aggregates fleet data, including costs incurred from driver speeding fines, the cost of any accidents in which employees may have been involved, the cost of non-standard maintenance and tyre replacement, end of life damage charges the driver may have incurred and risk assessment scores... This is then analysed by GE Capital software to produce detailed reports showing the frequency and cost of all major aspects of individual driver behaviours... The adoption of Integrated Solutions is being forecast to deliver a 25% reduction in accident costs, 10% lower fuel costs, a 5% saving in fines administration, a 5% reduction in non-standard maintenance and tyre abuse and up to a 30% decrease in end of life damage recharges...

* Truck dealers: EPA drastically underestimated emissions costs

Washington, D.C.,USA -Land Line, by Charlie Morasch -8 March 2012: -- The Environmental Protection Agency underestimated how environmental rules from 2004 through 2010 affected new truck prices, according to a new study... Not only did the regulations turn off new truck buyers, but the resistance proved to be counterproductive to the EPA’s agenda of cutting NOx and diesel particulate emissions when truck owners held onto older trucks or used alternatives like glider kits... The National Automobile Dealers Association and American Truck Dealers announced the study’s findings during a teleconference Thursday... EPA underestimated regulation compliance costs by two to five times, adding thousands to new truck prices and leading to the unintended effect of depressed new truck sales, and increased truck emissions, the study says... U.S. retail sales of heavy duty trucks neared 500,000 in 2005, but fell to around 200,000 in 2009, the study says...
