* DC - Medium-Duty tires go fuel-efficient

Washington,DC,USA -TruckingInfo, by Jim Park -25 August 2014: -- Downtown streets still pose a threat to delivery fleets' tires. Nobody will give up protection for fuel economy; the tire people say they won't have to... The medium-duty world is dominated by the rental and leasing sectors and the pickup and delivery sector, at least in terms of the Class 5-7 trucks using 17.5- and 19.5-in tires. What they wanted has dictated what the tire makers delivered. And until recently, that crowd wanted a bulletproof tire would last forever, could be retreaded several times, and would handle the rigors of life on the mean city streets... Over the years, tire makers delivered the tires industry wanted -- and was prepared to pay for. It's a very price-sensitive market, and that has historically limited innovation. And historically, fuel economy wasn't even on the radar screen...

* UK - Report reinforces perceived value of cold weather tyres

Birmingham,West Midlands,UK -Transport Engineer -17 May 2013: -- After a winter that saw very low temperatures for most of the country, ATS Euromaster's annual winter weather study shows that the value of fitting cold weather tyres is hitting home... Winter tyres have been proven to offer improved grip, handling and cornering aw well as reduced braking distances when the temperature drops below 7°C – which it did for 95% of the six months measured for the study... Of 10 cities analysed, Newcastle upon Tyne recorded the highest number of days when commuter time temperatures dipped below 7°C, with 162 compared to the 129 reported in the previous year's study. Aberdeen had the second highest number with 159 days...

LOWER DEMAND * USA - Goodyear to idle hundreds locally

Part of radial truck tire operation to close for six days

Topeka,KS,USA -The Topeka Capital Journal (subscription), by Michael Hooper -March 06, 2008: -- Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will shut down its radial truck tire business in Topeka for six days during the Easter holiday because of lower demand from the trucking industry... The radial truck tire business is experiencing a softening because of lower demand for original equipment semitrailer tires, economic softness, rising fuel costs and high raw material expenses, according to rubber tire and trucking experts...
