TRUCKERS' STRIKE * USA: At California Ports

* California - Truckers strike over employment status


--- Some drivers are currently striking at a pair of the nation’s busiest ports — Long Beach and Los Angeles — as a way to demand reclassification. Every day, as many as 25,000 short-haul trucks trek to and from the ports, transporting containers filled with goods that end up in stores like Wal-Mart, Target and Costco... Most of the drivers aren’t employees of a transport company. Instead, they lease or own their trucks and are classified as independent contractors. Many don't think that’s the way it should be. The California Labor Commission has seen more than 800 complaints filed against port-trucking companies in the last five years... Nick Weiner, leader of Justice for Port Drivers, said most truck drivers drive for one trucking company... It’s cheaper for a company. It’s not on the hook for paying benefits or providing insurance. About 750 trucking companies work out of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, most with fewer than 100 trucks... Rich Pianca, acting general counsel for American Trucking Associations, said the majority of litigation, especially in California, is ruling on the side of drivers, which could be a problem for the industry...

* Oregon - Daimler AG workers in Portland are out on strike

Portland,ORE,USA -NWLaborpress.org, by BY MIKE ELK -July 19, 2013: -- No trucks have been produced at the plant since 520 Machinists and 68 painters struck July 1... The Swan Island plant is the only site manufacturing Western Star trucks, which are specialized for use in logging, mining, and other industries... Members of Machinists Lodge 1005 and Sign Painters and Painter Makers Local 1094 walked out after rejecting a company offer that included raises of $1.30 an hour over three years. They’ve had no raises for four years, during which time productivity increased 25 percent. The company’s proposed raises would have been partially offset by increased health insurance co-pays. The company proposal also would eliminate supplemental health coverage after retirees turn 65...


* Michigan - Hino Trucks begins preventive service care program

Novi,MICH,USA -Transport Topics -22 July 2013: -- Hino Motor Sales USA, said it has begun a preventive service care program for its diesel trucks... The new service program covers standard checks and replacements in the first two years, or 60,000 miles, including engine oil, fuel filter, air filter replacements as well as transmission fluid, the company said... The company said the program, called HinoCare, is available for all 2013 and 2014 model year 195 double cab trucks delivered between July 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014...

* Tanzania - 1,000 Trucks Stranded As Drivers Lay Down Tools

Mbeya,Tanzania -All Africa, by Ludovick Kazoka -18 January 2012: -- About 1,000 trucks are stranded at the Tunduma border town with Zambia after their drivers went on strike to demand official employment contracts as per newly introduced transport regulations... Earlier on Tuesday, Mbeya Regional Commissioner, Mr Abbas Kandoro, convened a meeting with the drivers to find a solution... He said the strike which started on Monday morning would affect the economy in terms of revenue and urged the drivers to call it off, while the government worked on their demands... The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) and leaders of Truck Drivers' Association (CHAMAMAT) attended the meeting... Last week, SUMATRA issued a statement instructing truck owners to sign employment contracts with their drivers and warned it would punish those who would not heed the order...

STRIKE * Mexico - 500,000 Mexico Bus and Truck Operators Go On Strike

50 associations announced Friday a 24-hour strike on Monday to demand a reduction and freezing of the price of diesel this year



Mexico,DF,MEX -EFE/The Latin American Herald Tribune (Caracas,Venezuela) -14 Feb 2009: -- Representatives of at least 500,000 bus and truck operators in Mexico from some 50 associations announced Friday a 24-hour strike on Monday to demand a reduction and freezing of the price of diesel this year... The representative of the National Confederation of Urban and Suburban Transport Operators, Mario Hernandez, told Efe that the suspension of service will start at midnight Monday in at least 23 of 31 states, immobilizing about a million vehicles... The leader of some 25,000 passenger-transport operators said that the measure seeks to pressure the federal government because of its "lack of the sensitivity" in responding to the request... Joining in the protests are such organizations as the National Farm Workers Corporation (CNC), the Autonomous Transport Operators Alliance of the Mexican Republic, construction trucking services and the Streetcar Alliance of Mexico, among many other organizations... These groups ask that the price of a liter of diesel, currently at 7.53 pesos ($2.00 per gallon), be reduced to 6.31 pesos per liter ($1.55 per gallon), its value in January 2008... The leader said that since January last year, the authorities began a price increase on fuels with the intention of equaling prices in the United States...
