SUMMIT * USA - Trucking Group Supports Distracted Driving Summit

DOT Secretary. Ray LaHood. said Tuesday he will "announce a list of concrete steps we will take to make drivers think twice about taking their eyes off the road for any reason" after next month's summit in Washington, D.C.

Washington,DC,USA -OH & S -Aug 6, 2009: -- U.S. Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood's, announcement Tuesday that his department will convene a summit in Washington, D.C., in late September to discuss causes and solutions to distracted driving has been enthusiastically received by the American Trucking Associations, which represents trucking companies nationwide. "If it were up to me, I would ban drivers from texting, but unfortunately, laws aren't always enough," LaHood said Tuesday. "We've learned from past safety awareness campaigns that it takes a coordinated strategy combining education and enforcement to get results. That's why this meeting with experienced officials, experts, and law enforcement will be such a crucial first step in our efforts to put an end to distracted driving"... SOLUTIONS * Canada - Associations speak out after eight days of rollovers in the GTA

An eight-day period that saw four high-profile truck rollovers on Toronto-area highways has numerous associations are speaking out and looking for solutions

Toronto,Ont,CAN -The Toronto Star /Truck News, by Adam Ledlow -27 July 2007: -- ... The Ontario Safety League (OSL) is calling for a joint provincial task force to look at ways of preventing such accidents. According to OSL president, Brian Patterson, there is an average of three truck rollovers a week in the GTA. Patterson told that police investigations show that of 50 truck accidents involving death or serious injury this year, only 15% were caused by the truck driver...

Accident * USA - Such trucks usually safe, experts say

Tanker trunks like the one that caused the collapse of a highway overpass in Oakland on Sunday are usually "very safe vehicles," according to experts.


Vallejo,CA,USA -The Vallejo Times-Herald, by Tom Lochner -30 April 2007: -- "Typically, they are very well-designed, sturdy pieces of equipment; usually, there are several compartments and baffles" to minimize disasters, said Tony Semenza, executive director of Contra Costa Community Awareness and Emergency Response, a nonprofit consortium of emergency response agencies and oil and chemical companies... The cause of Sunday's accident, which he considers an extraordinary event, cannot be traced to the truck's design, assuming it conforms to stringent federal Department of Transportation guidelines, Semenza said... Gasoline that escaped from the truck in Sunday's crash could have been ignited by sparks produced by metal scraping on the pavement, said Kuehne. Or else vapors could have been ignited by the heat of the engine or a spark or even by the friction produced by the crash, Semenza said... The tanks of tanker trucks are built of aluminum. Part of the reason, Kuehne said, is because aluminum tanks are sturdy enough to withstand moderate impacts and are much lighter than steel tanks, which are tougher. Steel tanks are also more prone to explode in a fire because tremendous pressure could build up inside due to the heat before the tanks would rupture with violent force.
The aluminum tanks on tanker trucks, on the other hand, "are specifically engineered and designed not to explode," said Contra Costa fire Capt. Dave George... Transport Safety Council * Europe - Volvo Trucks in co-operation with

Every year, about 40,000 people die in road accidents throughout Europe and one-third of these accidents are directly linked to alcohol

Brussels,Belgium -The Easier (Chester,UK) -27 April 2007: -- At a seminar in Brussels this week, Volvo Trucks has launched a co-operative venture with the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC)... Over a period of three years, the partners will conduct a campaign in Europe that goes by the name of ‘Safe & Sober’. The aim of the campaign is to increase know-how about the link between alcohol and traffic accidents and it is directed primarily at politicians, opinion-builders, safety organisations and the transport industry...
