* Belgium - Ford's: Probing the pothole problem

-- At its Lommel facility, Ford created what it calls a “diabolical” 1.2‑mile road consisting of precise replicas of some of the worst potholes and road hazards from around the world to help its engineers create more robust chassis systems... Potholes and other rough road surfaces are a billion-dollar problem for vehicles the world over. Indeed, a recent study by indicates pothole damage cost drivers $15 billion in vehicle repairs over the last five years or some $3 billion annually. Thus figuring out ways to make its vehicles more “pothole resistant” is one of the primary missions of Ford Motor Co.'s Lommel Proving Grounds facility located in Lommel, Belgium... Ford said its Lommel site incorporates actual pothole conditions found in both Europe and the U.S., while simulating more than 100 other road hazards found in 25 countries worldwide...

* Canada - Trucks slowing on green strategy

Toronto, ONT,CAN -The Australian (Sydney,Australia), by Bernard Simon -April 13, 2007: -- North American truck-makers have encountered a steeper slide in orders than expected, as a weakening US economy compounds an anticipated slump that followed the introduction of tighter exhaust-emission regulations... According to ACT Research, orders for Class 8 heavy trucks were 72 per cent lower in the January-March quarter than for the same period a year earlier... A UBS survey of 122 truck operators in the US and Canada concludes that business conditions are the weakest since the survey began two years ago. For the first time, more truckers reported year-on-year declines in freight rates than increases... Truckers said they were finding it especially difficult to fill their vehicles on return trips... The weakening dollar meant that "US manufacturers have about a 40 per cent price advantage over their European counterparts", compared with 5 per cent six years ago, Mr Vieth said. Sales in Mexico and Australia have been bolstered by the prospect of new clean-air regulations there...

RESEARCH * USA - ATRI measures impact of ACE truck e-manifest system

Alexandria,Va,USA -The Trucker -March 30, 2007: -- The American Transportation Research Institute today released research findings from an assessment of the Automated Commercial Environment Truck e-Manifest’s impact on international trucking operations... Survey and interview research conducted by ATRI revealed that physically crossing an international border into the United States is smoother when employing the ACE Truck e-Manifest, but start-up labor and equipment costs must be accommodated... Although these start-up costs are considerable for some carriers, the research shows that the ACE Truck e-Manifest has the potential to provide net operational benefits for medium and large carriers, according to the ATRI summary of its findings...
