* Brazil - Mercedes Benz lays off 1,500 Workers in 

Sao Bernardo do Campo,SP,Brazil -in auto news (Romania) -30 May 2012: -- Daimler AG/Mercedes-Benz, Brazil’s second biggest truck and bus manufacturer by market share, said it’s laying off more than 10 per cent of its workforce to cope with a slowdown in what only a few months ago was a market that was predicted to soon overtake Japan as the world’s fifth biggest for auto sales... All affected employees work at Mercedes’ plant in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, the company said today in an e-mailed statement... Brazil motor-vehicle sales fell in April as rising auto-loan defaults led to a constriction in auto credit, while output continued to decline on rising stockpiles and tougher environmental regulation according to the Brazilian Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association...


* France - PSA seeks layoffs, pay freeze in Sevelnord

Paris,France -Reuters/ST Motoring -31 May 2012: -- French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroen has asked workers at its Sevelnord plant to agree to a pay freeze, hundreds of job cuts and other concessions, or face possible closure, officials at two unions said... The company is opening talks on plans to reduce the threatened plant's 2,700-strong workforce, freeze salaries for at least three years, reduce leave and impose more flexible hours, CGT and CGC union representatives told Reuters... Peugeot declined to comment on plans for Sevelnord...

Trucking Layoffs * USA - Rise in January

BLS employment data shows spike, but job losses are well below year-ago levels

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Mar 12, 2010: -- The trucking industry continues to lose workers, but it's cutting jobs at a lower rate than a year ago, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics... The number of mass layoffs in trucking increased from 24 in December to 37 in January, pushing up initial unemployment claims from former workers in the industry 40 percent to 2,887 in January, according to the BLS data... Total employment in the trucking sector slipped 1.3 percent in January, according to provisional figures for that month from the Department of Labor agency...

LAY OFF * USA - Transportation Agencies Lay Off 2,000 as Funds Expire

Washington,DC,USA -Bloomberg/Businessweek, by Jeff Plungis -March 1, 2010: -- The U.S. Transportation Department said it will lay off about 2,000 employees today, temporarily halting construction projects, reimbursements to state governments and highway safety programs... The affected workers are in the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Research and Innovative Technology Administration... The furloughs are necessary because the Senate failed to complete action on a bill to extend unemployment benefits, according to the statement. Among provisions in the measure was an extension of authorization to spend money from the federal Highway Trust Fund, which bankrolls spending for parts of the Transportation Department...

Layoff affects 20 percent of work force, effective Aug. 3

Gallagher -Aug 3, 2009: -- Virginia International Terminals is laying off 90 employees, or 20 percent of its work force, immediately, the operating affiliate of the Virginia Port Authority announced Aug. 3... This is the first mass layoff initiated by VIT in its 27-year history. Prior to the announcement, VIT employed 452 people at its marine cargo terminals in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News and the Virginia Inland Port, an intermodal facility in Front Royal, Va.... Seniority and unique skill sets required in particular fields will determine which personnel will be laid off, VIT said... * National Teamsters takes over City Hall truck drivers' union

Chicago,ILL,USA -The Chicago Tribune, by Dan Mihalopoulos -August 3, 2009: -- The local labor group that represents City Hall's truck drivers was taken over today by the Washington, D.C.-based International Brotherhood of Teamsters... "Local 726 was put into trusteeship today," IBT spokesman, Galen Munroe, said. "Beyond that, we can't comment."... Local 726 leaders did not return calls seeking comment. City sources said the local's top official, Tom Clair, resigned Friday... Last month, Clair and other local leaders rejected Mayor Richard Daley's demands for pay cuts, including unpaid furlough days and compensatory time off instead of overtime pay, which is promised under the union's contract with the Daley administration...

LAY OFF * USA - Wabash Nat. to lay off 800 after holiday shutdown

Lafayette,Ind,USA -Associated Press/The Chicago Tribune -December 10, 2008: -- Wabash National Corp. plans to extend its annual holiday shutdown and lay off 800 employees after work resumes next year... The Lafayette-based truck-trailer manufacturer said Wednesday its traditional production shutdown from Christmas to New Years would instead last through Feb. 3. After that, about 800 workers will remain laid off until sometime in the second quarter of 2009... Wabash National has about 2,000 hourly and salaried employees in Lafayette...

Fuel Prices * USA - Cited in trucking layoffs

Scott County,TN,USA -The Knoxville News Sentinel (Knoxville,TN) -March 18, 2008: -- A Scott County trucking company has laid off just over half its work force, citing rising fuel costs as the reason... Randy Stephens, general manager with DRC Express, said those truck drivers would be brought back to work if fuel costs come down... DRC Express has 41 employees, and the layoffs of 23 people are effective Friday, March 21, Stephens said... He said the fuel costs have really been "putting a pinch" on the company, which at one point was up for sale...
