LARGEST & HEAVY LOAD * Canada - Have you ever seen anything this large on the road? It’s crazy big.

* Alberta - How could trucks move this 1,000-ton load?

-- What is it? I’m not completely certain—but the Internet says it’s some type of pressurized vessel to contain high pressure liquid (I would guess). Even though I’m just a mere physics professor and not a construction or road engineer I think this video is a great place to start talking about some of the cool things you can see in the video... Look at vessel compared to the size of the trailer. The trailer is way longer. Why? The answer is pressure. Pressure in the tires to be exact. The YouTube video says that the payload has a mass of 946,000 kg which would have a weight of 9.27 million Newtons. If you ignore the mass of the trailer, the ground has to push UP with this same force. That’s not so bad—buildings can have weights larger than that. However, there is one big difference between a building and a trailer: the area of contact. With a smaller area you can get a much larger pressure on the road surface... There is no way one truck could push that hard because there wouldn’t be enough frictional force between the tires and the road (oh and the engine probably doesn’t have enough torque). No, the only way to get this giant trailer to its destination is with 7 trucks...

"I've been on the road for three (3) weeks now moving the SASOL reactor---two more days and we will reach our destination. What a logistical challenge this project has been travelling 50km a day in some cases we achieved 3km per hour. MAMMOET started with five tractors and now are running six units. Very carefully !!! - Machinery from Korea moves through Harford on way to Peach Bottom

Harford County,MAR,USA -The Baltimore Sun -31 July 2009: -- The huge gray metal object stands 27 feet tall on an oversize flatbed with 144 wheels, weighs 431,000 pounds and is hauled by a lumbering beast of a truck that looks like something out of a Stephen King novel... All this week it's been roaming the darkened roads of Harford County, drawing crowds of gawkers for its nocturnal procession to the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in Pennsylvania. Last evening, it made the delicate crossing of Deer Creek on Route 136, which was reinforced in advance to bear the crushing weight... The object of this attention is an enormous transformer - a device that increases the voltage of nuclear-generated power before it is sent out into the electric power grid that supplies Maryland and nearby states... The night's objective: to move the transformer another 4 miles west on its 27-mile, eight-day overland journey - most of it along Maryland roads... It's an effort that requires the co-operation of Exelon officials, heavy-hauling specialists, utility workers, highway engineers, police and others. The move has been months in the planning, with practically every step choreographed... OVERSIZED LOAD * Canada - Trucks with football-field-length cargo on way to Alberta

Alberta,CAN -The Billings Gazette (MT, USA), by ED KEMMICK -31 Jan 2009: -- Thanks largely to the booming energy industry, Montana drivers - particularly those who frequent two-lane highways - have been encountering more and more supersize truck traffic... How big? One load that is coming up from the port of Houston and began its passage through Montana on Wednesday is 20 feet wide, slightly more than 20 feet tall and 290 feet long. It has 90 tires on 24 axles and weighs 917,000 pounds - so heavy that two trucks are attached to the rear to help push it along... The million-pound load consists of a steam condenser unit that will be use to process oil sands at a project in Saskatchewan. Many of the big loads are headed for the oil sands industry in Saskatchewan and Alberta, while other trucks are hauling giant generator blades and related equipment to a wind farm in Alberta... Transporting equipment to the oilfield is often no small matter
