* DC - Feds ask auto industry to help combat cyberattacks

-- The U.S. Department of Justice’s called on the private sector to work with the federal government and law enforcement agencies to fight cyber attacks... John Carlin, assistant U.S. attorney general for national security, made the remarks during a speech before the Society of Automotive Engineers’ 2016 World Congress at the Cobo Convention Center... Carlin said experts estimate more than 220 million vehicles will be able to connect to the internet by the year 2020... The technology has the potential to save lives, but warned terrorists will exploit its weaknesses and use it to do harm, he added... As head of the attorney general’s national security division, Carlin oversees a staff of nearly 400 that handles international and domestic terrorism cases, espionage, cybercrime and other security threats...

* Oregon - Cyber security firm warns of hacking dangers for vehicles’ wireless components

-- Cyber security company Tripwire reports that a new joint public service announcement from the FBI, DOT and NHTSA “lists wireless components of modern vehicles that can be vulnerable and the methods attackers could use to launch a real-life attack, similar to the one demonstrated last year in which researchers remotely seized control of a Jeep Cherokee” ... This follows last month’s news that Nissan's LEAF cars can be easily hacked, allowing their heating and air-conditioning systems to be hijacked... Lane Thames, Security Research and Software Development Engineer of Tripwire, provided the following comments: “... Another reason is actually due to how the computing ecosystem is moving from a mostly 'virtual' environment to a merged world where virtual things are interacting and controlling things in the world around us. Particularly, the IoT includes devices that are cyber-physical. A modern, Internet-connected car is a perfect example of a cyber-physical system. It is a thing that used to be based on pure physics, comprised of mechanical, electrical, and chemical systems... Now, these systems are controlled by onboard computers, and it might not be long before remote computer systems play a role in automotive control, especially with these systems being rapidly connected to the Internet. The point is that future technology (regardless of what we name it, i.e., IoT, etc.) will demand a holistic, cross-disciplinary approach for the design and implementation of cyber security and its interconnection with technology. This by and large does not exist today. Until this starts to happen, we will continue to hear about more and more technologies coming online and eventually becoming vulnerable to remote exploits” ...

* Europe - Millions of vehicles may be open to hackers


-- Your car, in some sense, is only as secure as the least secure Internet-connected gadget you plug into it: Researchers proved as much last summer when they hacked a Corvette’s brakes via a cellular-enabled insurance dongle attached to the sportscar’s dashboard. Now another hacker has found that those digital accessories may have left another, bigger class of automobile vulnerable to the same sort of over-the-internet intrusion: industrial vehicles like buses, trucks, and ambulances... In a blog post published earlier this week, Spanish security researcher Jose Carlos Norte revealed that he’d used the scanning software Shodan to find thousands of publicly exposed “telematics gateway units” or TGUs, small radio-enabled devices attached to industrial vehicles’ networks to track their location, gas mileage and other data. He found that one TGU in particular, the C4Max sold by the French firm Mobile Devices, had no password protection, leaving the devices accessible to any hacker who scanned for them... That allowed Norte, the chief technology officer for the security firm EyeOS owned by the Spanish telecom Telefonica, to easily look up the location of any of hundreds or thousands of vehicles at any given moment. And Norte believes he could have gone further, though he didn’t for fear of violating the law; with a few more steps, he says, an intruder could send commands over the vehicle’s internal network—known as its CAN bus—to affect its steering, brakes or transmission... Researchers at the University of California at San Diego last summer who did develop a full CAN network attack via a different Mobile Devices’ vehicle accessory, albeit one aimed at smaller cars and trucks. The UCSD researchers were able to remotely alter that dongle’s firmware to send CAN commands to a Corvette that turned on its windshield wipers or disabled its brakes, showing the danger of those insecure, Internet-connected car gadgets...

* Michigan / USA - Jeep hack a red flag for industry


-- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is vehemently opposed to hackers’ plans to reveal how they were able to wirelessly hijack a Jeep Cherokee — and potentially hundreds of thousands of other Fiat Chrysler vehicles... The apparent breakthrough is a major security issue not only for Fiat Chrysler, but all automakers... Car hacking has been demonstrated in controlled simulations in recent years -- mostly when hackers are physically plugged into the vehicle’s hardware. Security researchers Chris Valasek and Charlie Miller recently remotely hacked into a 2014 Jeep Cherokee in a real-world test that included disabling the SUV’s engine functions and controlling interior features such as air conditioning, locks and the radio... Miller, a former National Security Agency hacker, and Valasek, director of vehicle security research at the IOActive consultancy, have been sharing their research with Fiat Chrysler for nearly nine months, enabling the company to quietly release a fix ahead of the Black Hat security conference next month in Las Vegas. They plan to release redacted, yet detailed, information at that event... The men reportedly manipulated the vehicle through a vulnerability in a chip that provides a wireless and a cellular network connection. That opened the door to another component for the vehicle’s Uconnect infotainment system that allowed them to rewrite the car’s firmware and send commands through the car’s internal computer network. Miller estimated as many as 471,000 vehicles with vulnerable Uconnect systems are on the road, according to Wired. Fiat Chrysler would not confirm this number... Last week, many major automakers announced an Auto Information Sharing and Analysis Center that will serve as a central hub for intelligence and analysis, providing timely sharing of cyber threats and potential vulnerabilities in motor vehicle electronics or in-vehicle networks... Fiat Chrysler earlier this month released a software update that it says fixes the security breach... While Uconnect was singled out in the article, experts argue practically any modern vehicle could be vulnerable — a major concern, as automakers produce millions of connected cars with Internet capabilities...

* ACT / Australia - TIC sees effetive loal shield to vehicle hacking: Australian standards and regulations ‘more stringent than in US’

-- The Truck Industry Council (TIC) believes the Australian tougher laws and regulations will protect commercial vehicles from the type of vehicle hacking danger illustrated this week in the United Sates (of A.)... Technology magazine Wired published its on-road hacking experiment just as USA senators separately brought in a Bill to strengthen up their country’s vehicle IT defences, with both moves highlighting vulnerabilities in that country... In a written response to ATN on Australian commercial vehicles’ resistance to malicious outside interference with the safety and proper functioning of onboard systems, TIC chief technical officer Mark Hammond insists they are robust... On that point, Hammond underlines the difficulty of what the security researchers undertook to get through what is a lesser EMC regime and only one vehicle... There was three years of initial work, then with a university grant of US$80,000 they purchased two more vehicles that they claimed to have spent a further 12 months tearing down and digitally and physically, mapping out their electronic control units, to get to where they are today...

Your phone can be hacked. And now your car can be hacked too... The modern car is no longer simply a mechanical propulsion device. It has also become a complex network of computers managing almost every aspect of the vehicle, from emission control to airbags, anti-lock brakes and entertainment systems. Some cars have up to 70 separate electronic systems, running on 200 million lines of code. The computers are in control... For Brian Contos, security strategist with McAfee, a security technology subsidiary of chip-maker Intel Corp., car hacking is an issue that must be solved by auto manufacturers in the factory, rather than relying on drivers to add their own aftermarket antivirus protection. Besides, car buyers are notorious for ignoring safety features. “But while a hacked phone may be a big personal inconvenience, just one hacked car creates a huge risk for everyone else on the road” observes Contos ...

HACKERING * USA - Scientists hack into cars' computers: control brakes, engine

During a CarShark hack they could disable the brakes and stop the engine

San Diego,CAL,USA -The Christian Science Monitor, by Mark Clayton -August 13, 2010: -- Two sets of researchers have shown that cars' onboard computers can be vulnerable to hackers. Cars remain safe, they say, but the studies show that flaws need to be addressed soon... Scientists at the University of Washington and the University of San Diego devised a program called CarShark to hack into cars' onboard computers. During a CarShark hack (pictured here) they could disable the brakes and stop the engine. But CarShark needs to be directly connected to the car computer, making it impractical in real-world conditions... Hacking into a vehicle's central computer wirelessly via the tire-pressure monitor system and taking control "is something we're not able to do right now," Marco Gruteser, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rutgers University, says. "But we can't rule out that it's possible. Our goal is to raise awareness for consumers before this becomes an actual risk.
