REDUCING FUEL CONSUMPTION * USA: With truck-platons

* New York - Two-truck platoons can reduce fuel consumption by 4%: NACFE

--- Two-truck platoons have the potential to reduce fuel consumption by about 4%, averaged across both vehicles. That’s the finding from the latest North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) confidence report, published today... The study looked at testing that has aolready been conducted. It then adjusted on-track test results to take into account real-world, on-road realities such as traffic congestion and the fact the two trucks will likely only be able to remain in platoon formation about 75% of the time. Track testing has shown the lead truck reducing fuel consumption by 4% while the following truck saves 10%... This is with a following distance of 40-50 feet, which NACFE’s Mike Roeth predicted will be the starting point as two-truck platooning is adopted.concept” ... Though platooning is not yet in use, many of the technologies that will enable it are already available, Roeth pointed out...

Streamlining and reduced speeds are helping long-haul truckers cope

Montreal,Qbc,CAN -Canwest News Service, by Rene Bruemmer -August 27, 2008: -- Speed limits in the United States are as high as 120 kilometres per hour, but speed reductions are one of several fuel-saving measures the trucking industry has been using since the price of diesel rocketed in the past year... Diesel was selling for about $1.40 a litre in Montreal -- double what it cost 13 years ago... In the face of diminishing profit margins, trucking firms are making their fleets more aerodynamic, putting in generators to cut down on idling costs, and installing speed limiters...The days of bulky, square-nosed trucks with massive radiators and protruding exhaust pipes are slowly being phased out as truck design moves toward more aerodynamic rounded corners and recessed headlights and tanks...

FUEL COST SOLUTIONS * Australia - Truckers must pass on fuel increases

Sydney,NSW,Australia -Transport and Logistics News -8 July 2008: -- With the Federal Government’s emissions trading likely to further increase the price of diesel, the already struggling trucking industry should prepare a system to get through tougher times, the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) said... The draft report of the Garnaut Climate Change review proposed that the transport sector and fuel should be included in the emissions trading scheme... If the Federal Government adopts the report’s proposal, the price of diesel is likely to rise when the scheme sets off in 2010... ATA chairman Trevor Martyn said the draft report was a reminder of the need for a system to pass increases in the cost of fuel on to customers... Mr Martyn said that including the transport sector in the scheme was better than more regulation, and strategies such as reviewing costs every week and imposing a fuel surcharge would enable operators to get through the introduction of emissions trading...

FUEL REBATES * USA - Connecticut governor signs bill for cash discounts on fuel, delayed tax hike

The new law, stops a scheduled fuel tax hike. It also allows more fuel stations to offer cash discounts

CT,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Keith Goble/The Hartford Courant -June 20, 2008: -- Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell put her signature on a bill Tuesday, June 17, to offer consumers a break from high fuel prices... More fuel stations throughout the state now are allowed to offer cash discounts. The discount overrides franchise agreements between oil companies and fuel stations, thus allowing retailers to offer discounts to customers who pay cash to fill up... About 85 percent of the state’s approximately 1,000 fuel stations are affected by such agreements, Advocates for the change say the discounts could save consumers between 10 cents and 20 cents per gallon in a state where a gallon of diesel is averaging $4.90...

FUEL COSTS * USA - ATA Backs Oil-Market Investigation

Arlington,VA,USA -The Wall Street Journal/ Transport Topics -4 June 2008: -- American Trucking Associations said Wednesday that it supports the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission for taking steps toward increasing transparency of the energy futures markets... The CFTC disclosed a sweeping probe into U.S. oil-market trading last week, saying it was expanding its surveillance of energy markets, reported... The regulatory body also said it will improve oversight of the energy futures market by expanding the amount and quality of information received from energy traders... ATA said "could help burst the bubble that has formed in the petroleum markets.”...
