* California - Tesla developing self-driving tech for semi-truck, wants to test in Nevada


--- Tesla Inc is developing a long-haul, electric semi-truck that can drive itself and move in "platoons" that automatically follow a lead vehicle, and is getting closer to testing a prototype, according to an email discussion of potential road tests between the car company and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)... Meanwhile, California officials are meeting with Tesla on Wednesday "to talk about Tesla's efforts with autonomous trucks," state DMV spokeswoman Jessica Gonzalez told... The correspondence and meeting show that Tesla is putting self-driving technology into the electric truck it has said it plans to unveil in September, and is advancing toward real-life tests, potentially moving it forward in a highly competitive area of commercial transport also being pursued by Uber Technologies Inc and Alphabet Inc's Waymo...

... In just the last year, trucking's fuel speculation has assumed an even more radical form: electricity... That encompasses medium- and heavy-duty trucks and would account for about 5 percent of those trucks forecasted to sell in 2026... Questions also swirl around the unproven technology: Is it viable for long-haul trucking? How quickly can the infrastructure be built? Will there be one dominant technology or a variety of electric hybrids? ... Some, if not all, of the diesel truck makers are in the early stages of developing electrified trucks for short-haul applications. However, it’s newcomers to heavy-duty trucking – startup Nikola, Silicon Valley maverick Tesla and automaker Toyota – that are more aggressively leading the way for electrified powertrains... Startup Nikola says that 8,000 of its electrified tractors have been ordered. More than 1,000 of the prospective buyers are owner-operators, according to the company...

---  As battery and fuel cell technologies advance, so too do the prospects for electric rigs in the industry, says Mike Roeth, director of the North American Council on Freight Efficiency... Roeth says the technology may be more suitable to regional and short-haul segments, given the lack of fueling infrastructure. Even with strategically placed fueling and charging stations, trucking’s lack of predictable routes, even in the contract freight market, challenges alternative fuel newcomers, he says... Major truck and engine makers themselves have invested in the development of electric- and more conventional hybrid-electric-drive vehicles, but they see the most short-term promise in shorter-run applications, such as the port drayage hauls where Toyota is testing its prototype...

* Ohio - Workhorse logs 5,000 orders for W-15 Electric Pickup Truck, plans production launch

--- Workhorse Group has collected about 5,000 nonbinding orders from large businesses and government agencies for its W-15 extended-range electric pickup truck, enough to begin commercially manufacturing the vehicle... The Loveland, Ohio, trucks company announced its biggest order to date — 2,500 trucks from Ryder System Inc., the fleet management giant... Ryder said Tuesday it would distribute Workhorse delivery trucks and an electric pickup truck in North America, as well as provide warranty and maintenance work... The W-15, which is debuting as a drivable concept vehicle Tuesday at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo in Long Beach, Calif., has already attracted pre-orders or letters of interest from Duke Energy, the cities of Portland, Ore., and Orlando and more... The orders would represent about $250-million worth of initial sales for the company. The trucks are priced at about $52,000 and are expected to be eligible for state and federal green vehicle incentives such as the $7,500 federal income tax rebate...

ELECTRIC DELIVERY TRUCK * USA: By chinese maker BYD

* California - BYD partners with San Francisco Goodwill for electric delivery truck pilot

--- The San Francisco chapter of Goodwill will test the viability of electric delivery trucks by deploying 11 BYD trucks in San Francisco and nearby Redwood City and Burlingame. SF Goodwill will operate 10 Class 6 delivery trucks and one Class 8 refuse truck for 24 months, while collecting and analyzing data on vehicle performance, maintenance and emission reductions. The project will provide Goodwill with a model to electrify its truck fleet that can then be replicated at any of its 165 national Goodwill regions... BYD estimates that the 11 trucks, which were assembled at its Lancaster, California facility, will result in the reduction of over 1,355 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 1.2 tons of criteria and particulate matter emissions over their lifetimes...

TESLA's TRUCKS * USA: Could also be a boon for trucking companies

* California - Tesla could add billions in revenue by entering the trucking market, analyst says

--- A high-tech Tesla semitruck could garner billions in revenue just by capturing a small fraction of the country's trucking market, according to one analyst. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas says its announced entry into electric autonomous semitrucks makes "a lot of sense — maybe even more sense than passenger cars" ... If Tesla can sell about 25,000 trucks a year, Jonas estimates the company could add $2.5 billion in annual revenue just by capturing 10 percent of the total U.S. new truck market... Jonas also said, Tesla's move could be about building a service business... For example, the automaker could sell trucks without batteries (lowering initial costs) and then offer a battery swapping service. (Tesla has, in fact, started a battery swapping pilot program for its cars, as a faster alternative to charging, but the company has not spoken much about it lately) ...

TOYOTA's HYDROGEN TRUCK * USA: Why Toyota's truck is important and different

* Texas - Toyota has created a prototype electric tractor-trailer powered by hydrogen fuel cells

--- Toyota Motor Corporation revealed a surprise on Wednesday: The automaker has created a hydrogen fuel cell system to power zero-emission electric heavy trucks. Toyota engineers have installed a prototype of the system in a heavily modified Kenworth 18-wheeler that will soon begin operating in a test in California... Toyota actually has a working electric truck to show off right now... The number of battery cells required to move an 80,000-pound vehicle several hundred miles is very large, meaning that the battery pack in Tesla's truck is nearly certain to be bulky, heavy, and expensive. That big battery pack will take a long time to recharge, taking the truck out of service for several hours a day... Of course, unless you're in southern California, there aren't likely to be hydrogen stations nearby. But while that's an obstacle for fuel cell passenger cars, it seems like less of an obstacle for long-haul tractor-trailers owned by a fleet operator that can build its own strategically located stations along its routes... That's the bet Toyota is making...

He had previously spoken about a semi-truck that would be far better than anything on the road, and by reading into the statement one can presume that the next level he’s referring to is Level 4 or Level 5 autonomy...

* Michigan - A plug-in hybrid Ford F-150 and all-electric commercial trucks are coming as Ford approves new eQVMs

--- Ford announced that it qualified 3 companies making electric powertrains for its chassis through its Electric Qualified Vehicle Modifier (eQVM) program. Its entire lineup of commercial trucks will offer some form of electric powertrains, either hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and even all-electric... One company was even qualified to make a F-150 pickup truck with a plug-in hybrid powertrain... This new eQVM manufacturer, XL Hybrids, would use Ford F-150 chassis to make a plug-in powertrain, which will be a first for Ford’s pickup trucks... XL Hybrids: offering a hybrid electric drive system for Ford Transit, E-350 and E-450 chassis, and F-59 stripped chassis; as well as a plug-in hybrid upfit for the F-150 pickup. Lightning Hybrids: offering a non-electric hydraulic hybrid energy recovery system for the Ford E-350, E-450, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-650, F-750 and F-59 chassis...

* California - Grant helps buy 27 $300,000 trucks; find out what they do


--- Local logistics companies took delivery this week on four zero-emission electric yard and service trucks as part of efforts to reduce air pollution in Southern California... The four are the first of 27 from BYD Heavy Industries that will be divided among two companies. The trucks are meant to stay on site and not travel the public roadways... BNSF Railway and Daylight Transport warehouse logistics companies have traditionally used diesel trucks to move goods internally on their properties. Regional and business leaders and air quality officials hope the increasing use of electric trucks in the future will cut down on truck exhaust, which is a leading cause of air pollution in the Inland Empire... On Friday, Daylight Transport, which is opening its first Inland Empire warehouse in Fontana on March 20, welcomed four electric trucks manufactured by China-headquartered BYD. The company has a manufacturing plant in Lancaster. The occasion was marked by an event organized by the state of California, the San Bernardino Council of Governments and the two logistics companies...

* Ohio - Electric vehicle maker Workhorse taps stock market for more cash

--- Workhorse Group Inc., which makes electric delivery vehicles and drones, is hoping to raise funds to cover working capital by offering 6.5 million shares of its common stock at $3 a share... The company said it expects some $17.6 million in net proceeds from the sale – which closes Wednesday – to cover corporate expenditures, research and development and more... Workhorse has a lot of activity to fund. It is currently on contract with UPS to provide more than 300 battery-electric delivery vehicles... In September, the company said its partner, body manufacturer VT Hackney, is among six candidates to win a contract with the U.S. Post Office to produce hundreds of thousands of a new mail delivery truck. Workhorse and VT Hackney will spend the year developing 50 prototype vehicles for the agency to evaluate... Workhorse is also developing a truck-mounted, FAA-compliant drone delivery system called HorseFly... In May, the company plans to present a working prototype of its W-15 electric pickup work truck at the ACT EXPO Conference in Long Beach, Calif. The W-15 is being billed as the most economical, safest and lowest-emission pickup in the country... The vehicle – which is designed for fleets – has an 80-mile battery-powered range, with a gasoline range-extender. Duke Energy is one of several possible clients that have signed non-binding letters of interest, with a potential purchase order of up to 500 trucks...

* Michigan - Ford reveals new electric vehicles, U.S. production plans

--- Ford Motors revealed seven out of 13 new electric vehicles Tuesday, including hybrid versions of the F-150 pickup and Mustang, along with a fully electric SUV with at least 300 miles and a plug-in hybrid Transit Custom van... The automaker hope its electric vehicle plans will make its most popular vehicles “more capable, productive and fun to drive,” and that electric cars will exceed gasoline-powered vehicles within the next 15 years... Included in the seven new vehicles revealed were two new electrified police cars and a high-volume autonomous ride hailing vehicle, which will launch in North America in 2021...

--- The would-be Tesla for heavy trucking teased us last summer with computer renders of a promised truck, along with impossible-sounding capabilities and benefits for customers... Some of those impossible-sounding claims? How about 1,000 horsepower and 2,000 lb.-ft of torque? That's enough power to haul loads up a 6 percent grade at 65 mph, rather than the 35 mph achieved by today's diesels, said Nikola Motor Co. founder and CEO Trevor Milton... Claimed driving range tops 1,200 miles on a full load of hydrogen fuel, which Nikola will furnish without charge for the truck's first million miles. Nikola is rolling out a network of 364 fueling stations nationwide to keep the Nikola One rolling... Nikola will lease its trucks, including a million miles of free fuel, for between $5,000 and $7,000 a month, which is less than drivers typically spend on fuel, making the use of a new truck effectively free. They say they will deliver production trucks by 2020... Of course, there isn't even a factory yet, so how will Nikola start delivering trucks in 2020? They have pragmatically signed a deal for truck-maker Fitzgerald to build the first 5,000 trucks under contract, while Nikola's factory is prepared...

--- Chinese-backed electric vehicle developer BYD America has launched the industry’s first all-electric, long-range electric garbage truck, a project jointly developed with Wayne Engineering, the Iowa-based refuse industry equipment maker... But the election of Donald Trump could usher in big changes in national environmental and fuel-efficiency policies. The president-elect has called climate change a hoax and said he would foster accelerated development of the nation’s coal, petroleum and natural gas resources while reducing the Environmental Protection Agency’s reach... So is BYD’s all-electric garbage truck a last gasp? Probably not, according to industry insiders...

ELECTRIC VEHICLES * USA: $ 52M YEARLY TO PREVENT INJURIES

* DC - 'Quiet cars' rules to prevent injuries will cost makers $52 million a year


--- The US government on Monday completed long-delayed rules that will require "quiet cars" like electric vehicles and hybrids to emit alert sounds at speeds of up to 18.6 miles per hour (30 km/h) to help prevent injuries among pedestrians, cyclists and the blind... The rules, which were required by Congress, will require car makers like Tesla, Nissan and Toyota to add alert sounds to all vehicles by September 2019... The US Transportation Department said it expects the rules would prevent 2400 injuries a year in 2020 and would require the addition of alert sounds to about 530,000 2020 model vehicles... The US National Highway Transportation Department said the rules will cost the car industry about $US39 million ($51.67 million) a year because car makers will need to add an external waterproof speaker to comply. But the benefits of the reduced injuries are estimated at $US250 million to $US320 million a year... The new rules apply to hybrid and electric cars, SUVs, trucks and buses that are up to 10,000 pounds and are aimed at preventing crashes at intersections or when electric vehicles are backing up...

SELF DRIVED "TESLA" TRUCKS * USA: But requiring trucker in cab

* California - Regulators say Tesla trucks will need drivers, at least for a few years


--- Don't expect future Tesla Semis to be fully robotic. Even though a person won't be needed to drive the truck, an onboard manager will be. Regulators will want years and miles of data before allowing driverless big trucks... Driver not needed, but required. Tesla CEO Elon Musk told the world the company was going to develop the Tesla Semi in July. At the time, he surprisingly suggested the driverless vehicle would probably need a driver anyway, at least for a while, as reported by Electrek...  More recently Musk told CNBC, the first trucks will be used to gather data for regulators as well as add a level of safety. “It’ll be a few years after trucks can self-drive before regulators have seen enough data to feel comfortable not having a driver in the car. I think it’ll actually be a big safety improvement because you get a lot of accidents when drivers are tired behind the wheel” ... The Tesla Semi and Tesla Minibus are scheduled to be unveiled in three to six months, with production starting in two to three years. When the Tesla Semi does come to market, safety and lowered cargo transport costs are likely to have a greater impact on its success than being ‘fun to operate’ for former drivers...

Expected to be in production 2018, the new Workhorse W-15 light duty platform design is an extension of the E-Gen electric technology used in Workhorse medium-duty delivery trucks. With an expected 80 mile battery range using Panasonic 18650 Li-ion batteries, the Workhorse W-15 light duty design expects to provide economical, clean and powerful performance. If needed, a gasoline generator will then operate after battery power has been depleted, allowing the driver unlimited range to complete the days' tasks... --- Electric semi-truck startup Nikola Motor Co. is ratcheting up anticipation for its upcoming launch event by teasing the reveal of three products key to its vision of an emissions-free freight future... On Dec. 1 in Salt Lake City, the private company plans to show off its Nikola One electric truck as well as a model-agnostic battery pack and a hydrogen fueling station, it said Thursday... Come Dec. 1, though, the company also plans to display an example of the hydrogen stations it hopes to scatter across the continent. Initially, 56 stations will go up around North America, with more than 300 planned stations eventually making up the largest hydrogen network in the world, Nikola said... Using hydrogen created on solar hydrogen farms built by Nikola as part of a vertically-integrated supply system, the stations will sell the fuel to non-Nikola customers for $3.50 a kilogram — nearly half the current market price, according to the company... Rounding out its suite of products set for Salt Lake City, Nikola also intends to exhibit its 107-kilowatt-hour lithium battery pack. The pack is designed for the company’s Nikola Zero electric utility task vehicle but will go on sale next year as an option for other vehicle models and as an upgrade option for Nikola Zero owners...

--- Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America Inc., will display its FUSO eCanter all-electric truck in its booth at GIE+Expo 2016, October 20-21 at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville... Its parent company, Daimler Trucks Asia/Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation is well along in the development of an all-electric, battery-powered FUSO eCanter cabover work truck, and a year of in-use testing has demonstrated that FUSO eCanter all-electric trucks can generate a 64% savings in operating costs compared to an equivalent diesel-powered vehicle in the same service... In addition to in-depth performance data, the company elicited customer evaluations of the vehicles’ practicality, suitability for their specific operating requirements and their ease of use. Results have been quite positive, with all customers reporting that, when used as intended, the trucks performed well. Types of service included express package delivery and freight forwarding in urban environments, municipal refuse and public works service, and forestry service equipment and debris hauling...

Chief Executive Elon Musk wanted a strong third quarter to help build his fund-raising case for the Model 3’s production line and for the company’s Gigafactory, a massive battery-making facility in Nevada... On Sunday, Tesla said third-quarter global deliveries of its vehicles more than doubled from a year earlier to 24,500. They included 15,800 Model S sedans and 8,700 Model X sport-utility vehicles. An additional 5,500 cars were in transit to customers and will be counted in fourth-quarter sales, said the company, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif... After Tesla began taking reservations for the Model 3 this year, strong demand led it to say it would hit its sales target of 500,000 annually in 2018, two years earlier than expected...
