TRUCKS EFFICIENCY * USA: Corporate leaderships for green trucks

* DC - PepsiCo and FedEx among leading brands calling for truck efficiency

-- Freight is the work horse of the global economy, ensuring that the products consumers want land on shelves or doorsteps any time they wish... With 70 percent of goods in the United States being moved by truck, freight is a key source of our fuel consumption and corporate greenhouse gas emissions. Today, freight also offers companies a key opportunity to show leadership on climate... In recent weeks, Ben &Jerry’s, Cummins Inc., Eaton Corp., FedEx, IKEA, PepsiCo and Waste Management have voiced strong support for the new fuel efficiency and emissions standards for medium and heavy-duty trucks... PepsiCo Chief Executive Indra Nooyi summed it up like this in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed post she co-authored with Environmental Defense Fund President Fred Krupp: “Less money spent on fuel means more to invest in our products, processes, people and communities” ... That kind of thinking is what we refer to as the business-policy nexus. It’s driving innovative companies to take the next step in corporate leadership, aligning corporate sustainability operations, strategy and policy... The next wave of business leadership must include helping to shape and support the regulatory and policy changes required to preserve the natural systems that people, communities and companies need to thrive...

SURVEY * UK - Companies fail the fuel efficiency test

British businesses are squandering millions of litres of fuel because employees don’t drive company vehicles efficiently

London,UK -HGV UK -September 17, 2010: ... According to a survey, poor driving technique, inaccurate fuel gauges and bad record keeping are all contributing to companies being unaware of the real consequences of their fuel usage... The research by leading telematics expert Trimble MRM found recent hikes in petrol and diesel prices is the biggest challenge facing fleet managers today. The drive to make business more fuel efficient is forcing fleet managers to take a long hard look at their vehicles and driver behaviour... Trimble says the right driver feedback technology can make an average commercial vehicle up to 15 per cent more efficient... The emergence of new diagnostic solutions allows businesses to draw information directly from each vehicle and report on faults, performance, and exactly where fuel is being wasted... With exceptional accuracy, companies can also receive information on individual driver behaviour patterns, such as speed, style, braking or acceleration, giving fleet managers a real insight into which employees need additional training or to regulate their behaviour... By identifying drivers who do need to make changes, managers can focus on making improvements for the minority rather than taking a broad approach across an entire company – which can be time consuming and expensive... Trimble MRM provides telematics services to large and small fleets across the UK including Utilities such as British Gas and BT... (Image from carrentals.co.uk: The Life of a Truckie)

Efficient Trucking * USA - How SC Johnson Saved $1.6 Million With

Fort Collins,CO,USA -The Environmental Leader -November 29, 2007: -- SC Johnson recently completed a transportation-logistics project that eliminated 1,882 tons of greenhouse gases over a 12 month period, used 2,098 fewer trucks, cut fuel usage by 168,000 gallons and saved approximately $1.6 million... The Truckload Utilization Project combined multiple customer orders - and multiple products – to load the fullest, best configured trucks possible... The different weights and sizes of various products have a profound effect on how a truck should be packed for maximum efficiency. For example, a truckload full of Ziploc brand products is far below a truck’s most efficient load weight and a smaller number of pallets of Windex glass cleaner will hit the maximum weight target while leaving empty space in the trailer... To avoid this, SC Johnson began strategically packing multiple products on the same load. In making this a standard process involving multiple departments, the company says it can ensure the most efficient weight capacity is reached, thereby shipping the same amount of product using fewer trucks...
