* Australia: To investigate link between port driver pay, safety

* ACT - Pay levels that are low when compared to other professions, are a factor in driver shortages

-- The Australian government is launching an inquiry into the drayage industry practices at five major ports that could lead to higher mandated levels of driver pay or new work rules...  Australia’s Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal will look into pay and other practices related to container drayage at the ports of Brisbane, Melbourne, Freemantle and Sydney...  The drayage investigation is part of a broader review of the linkage between truck driver pay, working conditions and road safety in the independent tribunal’s third annual work program... The Container Transport Alliance Australia, an association of drayage-related businesses, criticized the RSRT’s drayage inquiry... Truck driver pay is a global issue for shippers moving product in international supply chains and companies trying to keep and hire drivers and attract new workers to the field... However, the RSRT, created by 2012 Australia’s Road Safety Remuneration Act, makes a direct link between levels of driver pay and highway safety. And the federal tribunal’s remit includes shippers and consignees as well as trucking employers and truck drivers... The inquiry is supported, however, by the Transport Workers Union of Australia and the Victorian Transport Association, a logistics group in Australia’s most densely populated state... Driver Remuneration & Safety * New Zealand - Labour MP launches trucking industry petition

"The current situation, particularly for small business owner drivers, can result in drivers working excessive hours to meet schedules, overloading their trucks and cutting back on vehicle maintenance"

Wellington,NZ -NZPA/Guide2.co.nz -23 July 2010: -- A petition launched by Labour MP Darien Fenton, calls for an inquiry into whether there is a link between truck driver remuneration and safety in the road transport industry... Ms Fenton, the party's transport safety spokeswoman, said a United States study had found the probability of a truck crash fell by 36 percent for every 10 percent increase in wages... Economic factors were having a direct impact on the death and injury toll in truck-related accidents in New Zealand, she said... She said the Government needed to show more interest in the issue...

* Stranded Queensland truck drivers must be paid
Queensland,Australia -ATN -25 January 2008: -- Queensland transport companies must pay long distance truck drivers an allowance when they are stranded by flood waters, warns the Commonwealth Workplace Ombudsman... Under the Transport Workers Long Distance Drivers Award, long distance truck drivers are entitled to an allowance when they are forced to stop by impassable highways including those roads closed in recent flooding...


* ATA defends AusLink road funding amid cutback claims
Melbourne,Australia -ATN -24 January 2008: -- The Australian Government’s funding for the AusLink transport program must not be diverted to other infrastructure, Australian Trucking Association (ATA) Chief Executive Stuart St Clair says... St Clair is responding to suggestions that some of the Government’s AusLink funding could be allocated to other infrastructure areas such as water... "Australia’s critical long distance road links, including the Pacific, Hume, Bruce and Sturt highways, are already undercapitalised"...
