AWARDS * Canada - Saskatchewan fleet turning into driver hero mill

Alexandria,VA,USA -Today's Trucking (CAN) –12 June 2009: -- Is a Canadian trucking firm in Saskatoon the most heroic fleet in the world? It would be tough to argue differently... Just a few weeks after one of its drivers was named a Highway Angel by the U.S.-based Truckload Carriers Association, the carrier group honored two more N. Yanke Transfer drivers for their heroism from the road... Jason Siddons and Paul Farrell, British-born team drivers hauling explosives with N. Yanke Transfer in Saskatoon, were commended by TCA for saving two brothers who were injured when their pickup truck swerved off the road in Northern Ontario... A few weeks ago, TCA has named Saskatchewan trucker Richard Rossnagel a Highway Angel as well. Rossnagel was honored for assisting the passengers of an overturned SUV last December...

TRUCKERS' EXCELLENCE AWARD * USA - OOIDA, Volvo recognize drivers for safe driving

OOIDA recently announced August honorees in the Association’s Safe Driving Award program. The following drivers have been recognized by the Association and program sponsor Volvo Trucks North America for truck driving excellence

* George F. Hanlon of Barefoot Bay, FL, has been recognized for a 51-year career distinguished by 51 years of safe, accident-free driving of a commercial tractor-trailer. George currently hauls concrete additive in a tanker.

* Glen E. Klipp of Ranson, WV, has earned the Safe Driving Award for 42 years of safe, accident-free driving of a commercial tractor-trailer. Glen currently hauls machinery and oversize loads.

* Robert Ravenscroft of Juneau, WI, has been recognized for 39 years of safe, accident-free driving. He currently hauls paper, equipment and some refrigerated products.

* Michael R. Crawford of Long Lane, MO, has been recognized for 14 years of safe, accident-free truck driving. He currently hauls loads that include wood, shingles and steel.

* Corwyn A. Hodge of Lena, WI, has been recognized for 12 years of safe, accident-free driving of a commercial tractor-trailer. Corwyn hauls lumber, aluminum and machinery.

* Brian K. Frank of Salineville, OH, has been recognized for 10 years of safe, accident-free driving. He currently hauls chemicals in a tanker.

* Elton Manzione of Athens, GA, has been recognized by OOIDA for nine years of safe, accident-free driving of a commercial tractor-trailer. Elton currently hauls fireworks and pyrotechnics for special effects.

TRUCKER AWARD * Canada - Honoured for safe trucking over six million kilometres

Elmira,ONT,CAN -The Waterloo Record (Waterloo,ONT), by April Robinson -July 24, 2008: -- Laverne Martin has driven a transport truck full of hardware through fires, floods and snowstorms... He's seen the Atlantic and Pacific coasts at least 100 times each, and driven six million kilometres crash-free... He did it all over the course of 44 years driving for the same company -- Home Hardware in St. Jacobs... But the money was good, the company treated him well, and he loved to travel... So he stayed... Martin was honoured for his safety record and years of service recently by being inducted into the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada Hall of Fame for professional drivers... Top Montana truckers will move on to nationals

AWARD * USA - Local truck driver honored for 29 years of safe driving

Anderson, IN ,USA -The Herald Bulletin, by KAYLEY FRANK -18 Fewb 2008: -- It was 1985, and Alan Adams was driving home after making a delivery to Seattle. He was coming into Chicago — headed east on Interstate 80 — and was approaching the exit ramp where another highway split from the interstate... For Adams, who has been driving a truck for just short of 30 years, close shaves like this one are nothing new... Although he’s no stranger to the dangers of life on the road, during the years he’s been a trucker, he’s been fortunate enough to escape them... Recently, Adams was recognized by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association for 29 years of accident-free driving — a feat that only a few OOIDA members were able to claim this year... Toronto,Ont,CAN -Truck News, by Adam Ledlow -15 Nov 2007: -- Nearing an overpass, Tim Ferguson reacted swiftly as a pedestrian, in an attempted suicide (according to police reports), suddenly ran out into the lane in which he was travelling. Ferguson braked and brought his truck to a stop on the shoulder of the highway, in front of the pedestrian. He then led the distraught individual to the safety of his truck, but the person promptly jumped out and headed back toward the highway... His courageous response led to the trucker being named the 2007 recipient of the Bridgestone Firestone Canadian Truck Hero Award. Ferguson, who drives for the Guelph-based Mackinnon Transport, saved one, if not more than one, life with his bravery, quick-thinking and compassion, the very criteria on which the Truck Hero Award, now in its 51st year, is based...

National Truck Driver of the Year Award * USA - William Gray, from Cumberland earns

Coast-To-Coast Success

Cumberland,MD,USA -The Cumberland Times-News, by Michael A. Sawyers -November 12, 2007: -- With 3.9 million miles on the road, accident-free by the way, William Gray has seen the sun rise and set on countless horizons. His view is always from a moving position... Gray has stopped for free-ranging cattle that decided they wanted to cross an interstate highway. He's been stopped by authorities checking for illegal immigrants aboard his tractor-trailer. He's driven in every state in the country except for the two that aren't attached to the other 48... Gray has had to pull his 18-wheeler to the side of the berm and immediately seek medical assistance. He's watched lightning bolts strike the highway surface in front of his semi. He knows that when he see clouds on a certain mountain in New Mexico that he can anticipate snow on the interstate that lies ahead... It's the life of a trucker and he loves it ... has loved it for the 28 years he has been eastbound and down. Ditto for westbound, northbound and southbound... His truck-driving skills helped the 48-year-old Standish resident place in the top 20 at the 2007 National Truck Driving Championships in Minneapolis... Cross, a truck driver for Automotive Component Carriers, a division of Penske Logistics operating in Buena Vista Township, finished 18th in the four-axle tractor with trailer division at the August competition... The American Trucking Association sponsored the 70th annual event, known as the "Super Bowl of Safety." ... Cross' 2007 Michigan State Driving Championship title earned him a spot at nationals, where he competed against 48 drivers in his division...

The announcement came Sept. 21 at the ATA Safety and Loss Prevention Management Council's Fall Conference in Pittsburgh... Gray has driven more than 2.7 million accident-free miles in his 28-year career... ATA's National Truck Driver of the Year is selected from professionals nominated by state trucking associations... * CFI honors drivers for reaching 3 million miles
USA -eTrucker -27 Sept 2007: -- Contract Freighters has honoed three of its drivers -- Charles Beaty, Jon Smith and Larry Trexler -- for traveling 3 million miles. With these three honorees, only eight drivers in CFI's history have reached this career milestone... Beaty, who resides in Seneca, Mo., has been a CFI driver since 1981 and has been driving professionally for 36 years. Smith, a Joplin, Mo., resident, began his career with CFI in 1984.
