* DC - Fewer truck-related deaths on US roads in 2009


Washington,D.C.,USA -Truck News (CAN) -Nov 16, 2011: -- The long awaited 2009 truck crash stats from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration have finally been released, and they tell a good story... The FMCSA inexplicably held onto the results longer than usual, as it considers revisions to the US hours-of-service regulations and when they were released, they were not trumpeted on the agency's home page, prompting raised eyebrows in trucking circles. The American Trucking Associations, however, says the stats, which have now been posted on the FMCSA Web site, show fatal crashes involving large trucks fell 31% from 2007 to 2009 and crashes resulting in injury dropped 30%... The report also shows the large truck fatal crash rate fell to one crash per 100 million miles travelled in 2009, down from 1.1 in 2008. Since 2000, the fatal crash rate for large trucks has fallen 54.5%, which is more than double the rate of decline seen by the passenger vehicle fatal crash rate...

Fatal Crashes * USA - Involving Large Trucks, Lowest In 10 Years

Tallahassee,FL,USA -WJHG -Apr 27, 2009: -- Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary, Stephanie Kopelousos, announced that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the National Highway Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) indicates that the number of fatal crashes in Florida involving large trucks, greater than 10,000 lbs., is the lowest since 1997... This is the first time in recent history the fatal crash rate for Florida is below the national average... Said Rose A. McMurray, Acting Deputy Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), “We are encouraged by the significant reduction in truck-related fatalities in Florida and applaud the FDOT for their tireless efforts to ensure the safety of our nation’s highways. It is vitally important that federal and state governments continue to work closely with the motor carrier industry to improve truck and bus safety and save lives.”... FDOT’s Office of Motor Carrier Compliance (OMCC) credits the substantial reduction in large truck crashes to the four E’s of Traffic Safety — Education, Engineering, Enforcement and Everyone else, including the drivers of these big rigs and other motorists...

* Greece - Old buses, trucks hike crash rate

Athens,Greece -Kathimerini -21 Mar 2007: -- About 40 percent of traffic accidents in Greece involve buses or trucks and twice as many people die in such crashes as in car accidents, according to figures made public yesterday... Also, the buses and trucks in these crashes are five times more likely to be more than 15 years old, said the Association of Greek Car Importers (SEAA), which unveiled the statistics...
