BORDERS TROUBLES* Africa: Trucks' shortcut amidst Senegal & Gambia

* Dakar - West Africa regional bloc to mediate in Senegalese trucker boycott of Gambia, now in its 9th week


-- Trucks carrying goods for Senegal’s southern region take longer but cheaper way round, than a shortcut across The Gambia, costing it custom revenue... Senegal said it’s waiting for a regional delegation to help resolve a truck drivers’ boycott of Gambia which is entering its ninth week, starving its smaller neighbour of customs fees... Senegalese truckers’ unions announced the boycott in February, following Gambia’s decision to increase tariffs at its two main ferry crossings to 400,000 CFA francs ($685) per truck... Senegal surrounds Gambia on three sides, with Gambia cutting a wedge through Senegal from the Atlantic Ocean to the interior... Trucks carrying goods for Senegal’s southern Casamance region no longer pass through Gambia by ferry but prefer to take a national highway around the country...

DANGEROUS BORDER * France / UK - Calais crisis: 12 migrants were discovered in the back of one truck

* England - A delivery company boss has been fined £8,400 after migrants sneak on to lorry in Calais

-- Ross Mackenzie, owner of Courier Force, said firm's like his need more guidance. He said his driver – an ex-Royal Navy marksman – was so shocked by to find the migrants on board that he "nearly collapsed"... The driver was handed a separate £7,000 fine. Mr Mackenzie contested both fines and they have now been reduced to a combined total of £6,000... But he says there should be more guidance and support for courier companies like his and are being penalised for the migrant crisis in Calais... This is a situation where whatever measures you take it doesn't prevent the sort of things we are seeing on the television, said Mackenzie, "If people are determined and desperate enough, whatever measures you take will not prevent some of what is happening" ... Mr Mackenzie, from Plymouth, said his driver deliberately stopped an hour away from Calais to refuel so as to avoid the risk of migrants sneaking on board the truck... He was away from his vehicle for no more than 15 minutes, and when he returned he checked the truck to make sure it was still secure... However when he arrived at the ferry port in Calais, Border Force workers with sniffer dogs discovered 12 migrants in the back of the truck. Mr Mackenzie, 39, said: "My driver was so shocked he nearly collapsed"... Mr Mackenzie believes that the migrants managed to get into the truck through its side curtains, and is training drivers to be more vigilant in their security checks...

* UK - Truckers need border protection not fines


-- Britain's Road Haulage Association (RHA) has urged trucking companies operating between the port of Dover and France to obtain UK Border Force (UKBF) accreditation to avoid fines of £2,000 per illegal migrant found in their trailers... The RHA was reacting to news that penalties imposed on truck drivers and their companies have tripled in the past three years from nearly 1,000 to over 3,300 in 2014/2015... The UKBF code of practice requires trucking companies to train their drivers, provide basic protection for vehicles and carry out checks... The RHA added it "very rarely receives complaints from members relating specifically to the UKBF code of practice"... RHA chief executive Richard Burnett said it is impossible for drivers to prevent 5,000 determined migrants getting into their trucks whether they are following the UKBF code of practice or not... Meanwhile the trade association that represents companies responsible for handling much of the UK's visible trade has given a cautious welcome to the proposed use of Manston Airport in Kent as a truck park as an alternative to the M20 highway...

BORDERS' TROUBLES * Europe - Bulgaria wants clean transport corridor to Greece for its carriers

Sofia,Bulgaroa -BTA -January 26, 2009: -- Bulgaria will request a clean transport corridor to Greece for Bulgarian carriers, Transport Minister Peter Moutafchiev told BTA Sunday. The request will be made Monday through the Foreign Ministry and through Brussels, he added. Meanwhile road hauliers asked the government to claim compensations from the Greek government for the losses they sustain as a result of the blocking of the Greek border... The Transport Minister met with representatives of transport companies on Sunday as the three border crossings on the Bulgarian-Greek border remained closed for yet another day of protests by Greek farmers...
