BATTERIES Cos. BLOCKED * South Korea - To enter in chinese market

* Seoul - Chinese Government virtually blocking Korean batteries from entering chinese market

--- The Chinese government issued an industrial regulatory plan that will expand the minimum size of battery manufacturers’ facilities in China 40-fold. Korean battery companies such as LG Chem, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovation seem to be virtually unable to get approval for several years... The Korean battery industry sees the Chinese government's action as its intention to block Korean companies’ entry into the Chinese battery market. Some say that it is retaliation against the Korean government's decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) System in connection with a recent move by the Chinese government to ban the Korean Cultural Wave. Some analysts say that the Chinese government rules out foreign companies more because of a lack of subsidies for eco-friendly batteries...

ELECTRIC BATTERY PRODUCTIONS * USA / China / Brazil ?) - Tesla Motors & BYD, compiting in 2020 with battery 'gigafactories'

* Nevada / USA - Tesla’s $5 billion factory is scheduled to be churning out 35 GWh

-- Tesla Motors Inc. is working on the world’s biggest battery production facility east of Reno, Nevada, as part of its plan to mass-produce a half million electric cars a year by 2020. If all goes as planned it would be the world’s largest lithium ion battery facility... By 2020 from its factories the same year Tesla’s $5 billion Nevada factory is scheduled to be churning out 35 GWh... The Fremont, California-based, is working with Japan’s Panasonic Corp. to rapidly expand its battery supply. A vital component of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s plan to produce a sub-$35,000 Telsa electric car is to install an annual capacity to make billions of small high-energy 18650 lithium ion cells. It takes thousands of these batteries, each a little larger than a standard AA, to make one of the energy storage packs that power the Model S... The so-called "Gigafactory" will make advanced batteries expected to power Tesla's next generation of electric cars, as well as have capacity to supply batteries for other carmakers and other battery users, such as utilities... (Photo from Panasonic: Small high-energy 18650 lithium ion cells) --  Carson City, NEV, USA - USA TODAY, by Chris Woodyard & The International Business Times, by Angelo Young - March 13 2015

* Shenzhen / China - A Chinese ‘Gigafactory’ in Brazil?

-- Chinese electric bus and car manufacturer BYD says it’s planning to expand battery production, increasing output so fast that it will almost match the planned output of Tesla’s so-called “Gigafactory” by the time it’s fully operational in five years... The Shenzhen-based maker of e6 electric cars and K9 electric buses wants to more than double its battery production output this year, from 4 gigawatt hours (GWh) to 10, continuing at that pace for at least three years, according to Reuters. A GWh is a massive unit of electrical energy (equivalent to 1 billion watt hours) used to measure a battery maker’s annual production output... At that pace of expansion, BYD could have 34 GWh of capacity... BYD, which is 10-percent owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, could have 34 GWh a year by 2020 if its plans work out. BYD produces most of its batteries in China, but it’s opening a Brazilian plant this year...

* Sumitomo Electric May Expand Sodium Battery Sales to Carmakers

Chuo-ku,Osaka,Japan -Bloomberg, by Masatsugu Horie -Nov. 13, 2011: -- Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. plans to sell a sodium-ion battery it is developing to makers of electric and hybrid passenger cars, expanding beyond the original target of commercial-vehicle fleet operators...  Sumitomo, which supplies electrical wiring to Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen AG, said in March it developed a cheaper alternative to lithium-ion batteries that uses liquefied salt as an electrolyte. It aims to begin production of the batteries in 2015 and targets revenue of more than 1 trillion yen ($13 billion), Chief Executive Officer Masayoshi Matsumoto, said at the time...  Sumitomo Electric said its new battery can be made cheaper and safer compared with lithium-ion batteries because liquefied salt costs less and is noncombustible. It had previously said the product may be applied only to buses or trucks because commercial vehicles usually travel on specified routes, allowing for regular checks to ensure the battery’s temperature remains at a level that prevents the electrolyte from solidifying, according to spokesman Masatoshi Nakata...
