CUMMINS & EATON * USA: New 50-50 joint venture

--- Cummins and Eaton are expanding their partnership in vehicle powertrains with the establishment of a new 50-50 joint venture that will be called Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies... Under the terms of the agreement, Eaton will receive $600 million in cash from Cummins for 50 percent interest in the joint venture... Since 2013, Cummins and Eaton have partnered in the development of a range of SmartAdvantage powertrain systems for heavy-duty trucks. The powertrains combine Cummins diesel engines with Eaton’s transmissions... The joint venture will design, assemble, sell and support all future medium-duty and heavy-duty automated transmissions for the commercial vehicle market...

 -- You might think that a heavy truck with an automatic transmission would make it easier to negotiate, but you would be wrong... On the tight course at the 2015 National Truck Driving Championships, a healthy majority of the 431 contestants in the skills contest at the championships are driving trucks with automatic transmissions, but many of them don’t like it. The six-problem course is tight, and unlike traveling the interstates, drivers are required to go very slow, stop and drift on a dime...  Many drivers have been complaining that it’s difficult to control a slow roll with an automatic transmission. That’s not been the case with the manual transmissions... ABF Freight System driver Ernest Wood, Vermont 4-axle class champion, said he drove an automatic at the competition last year. He agrees they can be tricky for drivers who aren’t used to them... But third-generation automatics are more predictable than earlier models, Mark Courter, equipment chairman of the competition, estimated that 65% of fleets are buying trucks with automated or automatic transmissions...

Automatic Transmission * Canada - OTA presses to go further in allowing it during road tests

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Truck News -6 Nov 2009: -- The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) says the province’s recent announcement that senior drivers will be allowed to use trucks equipped with automatic transmissions when taking their annual road tests does not go far enough... The association welcomed the change, but said it should not be the final word on the issue of mandatory annual road tests for drivers over the age of 65. Nor should the automat transmission allowance be extended only to senior drivers, the OTA charges... In a recent OTA member survey, 62% of fleets said they felt manual transmissions should not be required for new Class A driver road tests. Seventy-one per cent of respondents said they have automatic transmissions in their fleet for reasons such as fuel economy (64%), older drivers (19%), new drivers (30%) and non-traditional drivers (30%)... Automated Transmissions * Canada - Ontario okays for senior driver road tests

Toronto,ONT,Canada -Truck News -2 Nov 2009: -- The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has quietly approved the use of automatic transmissions for senior drivers who must annually renew their A/Z licence after the age of 65... Using a truck with an automated transmission will allow them to qualify for a full privilege Class A licence, according to the Private Motor Truck Council (PMTC), which along with the Ontario Trucking Association and Owner-Operators Business Association of Canada, has been lobbying for the change... In a letter to the PMTC, the Ministry of Transportation confirmed “As of Nov. 1 2009, senior commercial drivers conducting annual renewal road tests are allowed to use a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission to qualify for fully privilege Class A driver’s licence”... ...
