FUNDS TO EASE TRAFFIC CONGESTION * USA

* DC - Department of Transportation to provide $165M to make U.S. cities smarter

--- At the White House Frontiers Conference in Pittsburgh today, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced new funds that will help it roll out smart city technologies in places across the U.S., as part of the White House’s Smart Cities Initiative. $165 million in funding, including $65 million in public funding made available through two new grants, and $100 million in matching funds targeted for advanced transportation tech will help push the Smart Cities Initiative forward in cities including Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Houston, Los Angeles, Buffalo and Marysville... The funds are designed to help pay for solutions that ease traffic congestion and also improve driver and pedestrian safety. Pittsburgh will get $11 million through the program to install smart traffic lights, for instance, and Denver will get $6 million towards use of connected vehicles to mitigate traffic during commutes. Around $8 million in grants is also now available for the specific purpose of building on-demand mobility, including car sharing, demand-based dynamic buses and bike sharing into their existing public transit networks...

HOT LANES FIRST * Canada

* Ontario - HOT lanes debut in Canada


--- Ontario opened Canada's first High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes today, providing a new 16.5-kilometer travel option for 500 solo drivers who won a random draw and forked over $180 for a permit to drive the new lanes without a passenger... But don’t expect to see any trucks in the new lanes, at least not legally. The HOT lanes have a vehicle weight limit of just 4,500 kilograms, or about 10,600 lbs... The HOT lanes run on the QEW in both directions, from Trafalgar Rd. in Oakville to Guelph Line in Burlington, Ontario. It’s all part of a pilot program expected to last for two to four years... If you’re caught using the HOT lanes without a permit, you may be fined or issued a penalty. Fines range from $250 to $2,500...

* USA - Clogged cities vie for congestion-fighting money

Nine of America’s most congested cities are semifinalists for a federal $1.1 billion to fight traffic jams

USA -eTrucker, by Jill Dunn -17 June 2007: -- The U.S. Department of Transportation will consider Urban Partnership proposals from Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Miami, New York City, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters announced at a New York City news conference June 7... “In the next few weeks, we will work with New York and the other eight cities to further evaluate their traffic fighting plans to see if they reduce traffic now – not years from now – and have the ideas, the support and the will to do what it takes to reduce congestion”... These nine cities represent one-third of all congestion in the top 85 metro areas of the United States and are home to one-fifth of all the travel in the nation, Peters said...
