* China - New energy vehicles questioned after deadly accident

Shenzhen,Guangdong,China -Morning Whistle, by Zhang Yan -May 28 2012: -- Questions have been raised about made-in-China new energy vehicles following a fatal car collision over the weekend in China’s southern city of Shenzhen killed three in an electric taxi due to an explosion... Clean energy auto is a key industry for China’s economic upgrading... The central government promised in a 2009 blueprint to make China a global power in electric car manufacturing by investing billions of dollars in research and calling for annual sales of 500,000 cars by 2015... But the goal still seems too ambitious to achieve, chastened by lack of buyer interest due to an underdeveloped charging network and insufficient battery endurance... Lo Kok-keung, an engineer with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said that a fully charged lithium battery could explode in a serious crash...


* USA - Electric motors drive future urban vehicles

Mountain View,CAL,USA -Frost and Sullivan/AutomotiveWorld, by Anjan Hemanth Kumar -June 7, 2012: -- The emphasis on reducing tailpipe emissions and uncertainty in oil supply have forced vehicle manufacturers to look into vehicle electrification technologies such as hybrid and electric vehicles, which reduce or eliminate the use of internal combustion engines in cars. This development helps to increase electric components in the vehicle and is expected to boost the market for traction motors... According to recent Frost and Sullivan research on traction electric motors for hybrid and electric vehicles, the markets for motors in Europe and North America together are expected to scale up to 4.8 million units by 2017. This opens a door for opportunities in the form of design, development and supply of such motors for EV powertrain suppliers... OEMs looking to develop electric motors in-house are likely to hold the design and intelligence to themselves, but outsource modules and components. In many cases, vehicle manufacturers are looking for multiple suppliers for various research and commercial projects, but are likely to choose a single supplier in the long term... As OEMs look at more than one electric motor technology, suppliers are expected to have a wide product portfolio for a successful acquisition of contracts...

* DC - E15 fuel harms autos, says study backed by carmakers, refiners

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce Hoffman -May 17, 2012: -- A study backed by automakers and oil companies has found that a new blend of gasoline and ethanol recently approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency could damage some engines, adding new fuel to the debate over the E15 standard... It found that the new formula, 85 percent gasoline and 15 percent ethanol, damaged two of the eight vehicles used as guinea pigs in the high-mileage test... But the Department of Energy, which conducted its own tests on the new standard, called the methodology "unreliable and incomplete" ...

* Florida - The Effects of Ethanol on Fuel Mileage

Palm Coast,FL,USA -Auto Trends Magazine, by Matt Keegan -December 15, 2011: -- Most gasoline powered cars run on straight gasoline although these vehicles can also safely run on an ethanol blend consisting of 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline. Known as E10 fuel or gasohol, many service station pumps across the nation offer this blend. A placard should be posted on the pump alerting you that E10 fuel is in use... Ethanol, however, is less fuel efficient than straight gasoline. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that cars fueled with E10 will typically see a drop in fuel efficiency by 3 or 4 percent. What that means is if your car is averaging 30 mpg, you will most likely average about 29 mpg with E10 fuel. Certainly, that doesn’t make for much of a difference for one fill up, but over the course of a year you’ll pay for it...

New Delhi,India -The Times of India, by Neha Lalchandani -Nov 9, 2011: -- Since the early 2000s, when Delhi's air became dramatically clean after the introduction of CNG in public transport, it has once again turned into a deadly cocktail of various pollutants...  High levels of particulate matter (PM) that fired the original 'clean air' campaign 15 years ago, are no longer the only problem confronting policy makers. Levels of ozone, a product of the breakdown of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in sunlight - and a major cause of respiratory problems - have been going up over the years...   "NOx, ozone and PM2.5 are all essentially products of vehicular emissions and their levels are rising in proportion to a rise in the number of vehicles in the city,"  Anumita Roychowdhury of Centre for Science and Environment told TOI...

ALTERNATIVE FUELS * ETHANOL BLEND

* USA - New ethanol blend damages marine engines, industry engineers say

Fond du Lac,WI,USA -The Journal Sentinel, by Rick Barrett -Oct. 31, 2011: -- Makers of outboard marine engines say scores of their products could be ruined if consumers use a fuel mix that contains a higher level of ethanol...  On Tuesday, an engineer from Fond du Lac-based Mercury Marine Corp. is scheduled to testify before a congressional committee that recent engine tests showed severe damage to Mercury products run on a 15% blend of ethanol that's coming to market soon...  The tests showed that three outboards run on an E15 fuel blend were damaged to the point of engine failure, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association...  Makers of other smaller engines, used on equipment such as lawn mowers, snow throwers and all-terrain vehicles, also have said they believe that a higher ethanol blend in gasoline - scheduled for introduction as early as this fall - could result in catastrophic damage to those products...  Overheating and engine performance issues are among the problems that face owners of outdoor power products if they're mistakenly fueled with E15...  Choosing the wrong fuel by mistake is a big concern, according to small-engine makers...  E15 could damage more than 200 million pieces of outdoor power equipment that were not designed to run on ethanol content higher than 10%...
