TWIC * USA - LB port passes 1st test of ID card

Terminal Island,Long Beach,CAL,USA -The Long Beach,Press Telegram, by Kristopher Hanson -15 April 2009: -- Port authorities were breathing a collective sigh of relief Tuesday following the smooth launch of a federal port worker ID program in the nation's busiest commercial harbor... Despite fears that Tuesday's enforcement deadline would dislodge enough workers in Long Beach and Los Angeles to trigger trade delays and traffic gridlock, just a fraction of the harbor work force was actually affected... Of the roughly 5,500 people who entered waterfront work sites Tuesday, just 267 - or less than 5 percent - were turned away for not having a Transportation Worker Identification Credential, or TWIC... Enforcement began after midnight Tuesday and affects all mariners, longshoremen, truck drivers, fishermen and others who work regularly on the waterfront...

* USA - Washington Gov. Rejects Real ID Card

Wash,USA -Transport Topics/Associated Press -2 May 2007: -- Gov. Christine Gregoire (D), who is developing a high-tech state driver license that can serve as a border-crossing document, has signed legislation rejecting Real ID, a federal identification requirement that would create what would in effect be a national ID card... The Washington state legislation is part of growing state reservations against an expensive federal mandate, AP said...
